Title: vehicle history
Post by: novadragon007 on 02 March 2013, 12:34
car went for its MOT today (failed sadly) but the reason i knew it failed is because i checked online on the .gov website. I also checked the MOT history for the vehicle and something kind of alarming popped to my attention in the history to do with the mileage. It goes up regularly in the old MOT's untill it changes drastically from 90,000's to 60,000's how can i check if the car has had a different engine? or is it more likely the mileage has been changed electronically? wouldnt that flag in an MOT test though? is there any plates i can check?

even if the engine has been replaced, its still been clocked, or had new clocks fitted.  the mileage is for the car, not the engine (imo)

Thats what i was thinking, bought the car 2 months ago on a private sale. Anything i can do?

you can have a moan at the seller but if its a private sale then the onus is on the buyer to do the checking etc

Agreed, that's the kind of thing that should have been checked before buying. I'd still be getting on the phone to the seller to query it, it might well be as simple as a change of clocks.

Does it have bora sport clocks? Or any other clocks that wouldn't have been standard? Mileage can be reset using Vag Tacho easily enough.

pretty sure its the standard clocks but ill get in touch with him to find out although the mileage changed before he owned it so he may not even know. Would an ecu remap/change have cause it or is it only a clock change or vagcom that can do it?
