Title: Just when i thought everything was OK.
Post by: dixie180 on 01 March 2013, 19:43
Well here we go again.Sat in a bad traffic jam in my local city for about 25 mins when all of a sudden the effing Mk3 cuts out on me AGAIN!!!!!.Got the flashing oil light again and oil temperature was up to 90 degrees.Don't know where to start now as i thought changing the crank sensor and having the TB re-aligned would have sorted the issue, along with the other numerous things i have changed.Looks like this ownership will be coming to a swift end if i don't get the bottom of it.

90 degree oil temperature is normal.

TB realignment is for MK4's onwards, MK3's don't have it.

Random cutting out could be ECU or fuel pump relays, crank sensor or possibly a dodgy wire somewhere. Best thing to do is plug it into vagcom and see what fault codes it throws up.

Hi Khare, already been there and done that.Changed the relays, new crank sensor and VAGCOM scan never showed up anything.Actually Mk3's do have TB re-alignment because i had it done on VAGCOM VCDS.It's an 8v ADY engine.

When you replaced the crank sensor did you buy a genuine one? I bought a cheap one from ECP and it failed within 5 days.

Post by: dixie180 on 01 March 2013, 20:18
Yep was genuine and fitted by independent VW mechanic.

Have you had it on vagcom? Did the revs bounce all over place when oil light flashes?
Title: Re: Just when i thought everything was OK.
Post by: dixie180 on 01 March 2013, 20:25
Only cut out tonight about 5:30pm,so haven't had time to put on VAGCOM.Just cut out with flashing oil light.Tried to start it up again with my foot on the accelerator and revs bounced about a bit then, but engine quickly died again.Left it about 20 mins and started up first time and i drove it home, about 3 miles.

Sure I said this last time... But check the ecu earth under the battery tray. Make sure it's not burn inside. If it is.. Re earth.

I had the EXACT same issue. ECU earth was causing it.

Happened whenever. Started off stationary I believe, then when I was moving.. Then completely went. Mate it's a 5 quid fix. Worth checking anyway for a fiver. It does sound to me like its a strong possibility though buddy.

No worries pal.

Battery tray out, check earth is not burnt, maybe even temporarily re earth as a test and see how you go.

My checklist for that issue would be...

Fuel/ecu relay
Coil pack
Spark plugs
Dizzy
Crank sensor
Ecu earth

Coilpack is a cnut. They do go if you replace with a cheapo one
Title: Re: Just when i thought everything was OK.
Post by: dixie180 on 01 March 2013, 20:54
New coil pack has only been on about 18 months.New ECU and fuel pump relay about 3 months old, spark plugs 12 months old,new dizzy cap and new crank sensor fitted about 3 months ago too.So looks like ECU earth maybe the answer.

Coil pack only last me 15 - 18 months lol. Maybe you've cooked it. But you saying that you left it for 20 mins and came back to start it. That's the problem I had with mine. And it was crankshaft sensor. So I dunno maybe yours has packed in, but it shouldn't have.

I've cleaned earths too, but that just helped my lights. Nothing else tbh

Forgot to add i've got weird high pitched whirring noise inside the car but can't hear it outside the car with the bonnet up ???

Cleaning ecu earth would not really fix the issue.

What happens is water gets under the battery tray and fries the wire from the inside. Best way to tell is to strip it back. If its black, it's burnt. Strip it back until its not black. Mine was burnt right up to the ecu.

How does the ECU temp sensor work?, does it sense the temp and signal the ECU that's it too Hot or sumat?

If it does maybe cox you were in traffic, and temp went up, it may have cut engine off.

Is it your fans? Have a listen around until you pinpoint the issue. I hate in car noises. I've got a loose heat shield which is a bloody irritating nightmare.

Wouldn't think it would cause this particular issue to be fair.

Thought it may be the fans but is the same with them turned off.Fitted new temperature sensor about 3 weeks ago.The sound seems abit louder by the fuse box

I've also bought new thermostat as the temperature is not sitting right, but don't think the cutting out is to do with that.

Or it could be 30 mins of fault finding and an easy fix. Think positive!!

Got any pics of your three? Be interested to see them. :-)

She's got less lows now. Coils have gone, replaced with springs and shocks. About 10mm or so higher.

Also wheels are a little corroded.  winter hates my wheels!!

Cheers for the comments guys.Yeah i agree she needs to be 30mm lower,so new springs are on the list.As for the exhaust i'm not sure on the make as it was on the car when i bought it.Only had her about 2 and a half years and cost £480 with full history and 115,000 on the clock.
Thanks jiminbmth, gonna check the less expensive route before i decide to go down the new dizzy route .
She will be getting a clean in the next few days and i will post some better pics up.Just fitted roof aerial as she only had the wing mounted one(blanked that off).VdudNinja, yours looks sweet m8 .

Well i've been told by a man in the know that it may be either coil or crank sensor problem.Hope its not the crank sensor as that is only a couple of months old.The coil is about 18 months old and was fitted by the AA when the previous coil packed in.
VdubNinja, tried to get the battery tray off but 2 of the bloody bolts are rusted on solid.Gonna give it another go tomorrow with a good dose of WD40.
