Title: Wax or Polish??
Post by: GOLF-MK3-GTI on 01 March 2013, 14:29
As above which is better and is long lasting. Also does polish make your paint dull if you use it all the time?

Thanks

In short, both! they're completely different products mate, both with there own job, polish is for making the surface as good as it can be before being protected by a wax.
You wouldn't need to polish all the time, if done properly and your protective coat is looked after maybe twice a year depending on use.

Although there is so much more to getting the perfect finish!

If you look at this thread:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=249282.0

The pictures where all the swirl marks are being removed is done using a polish or compound, then the shots at the bottom are when it's been all sealed and waxed.

Loads of useful info in here mate:

Have fun!

Wax is a product that you would go over the car after it has been polished. Say you used the likes of Lime Prime from Dodo Juice to polish your car, It contains some fillers plus other bits so over a few weeks these will be washed/were off leaving your paint open to elements making it shine less and get covered in fall out.  If you where to wax over the top after you have polished your adding a thin lair of protection to the paint meaning the shine will last longer and the paint is protected.

You can also use a sealant like (Supernatural Hybrid Paste Sealant) instead of a wax these tend to be man made and will offer a longer period of protection but have a little bit less of a shine.

And just to confuse you even more you can add a glaze like Poorboys Black Hole after you polish this will add to the shine and fill in light swirls but you must still wax over it.

It wont dull your paint but remember a polish contains micro abrasives so doing it all the time wont be good for your paint plus there is always the risks of adding more swirls.

Interesting read

So what's recommended for black cars then??

It's about time I seals and waxed instead of just a polish  :embarrassed:

A sealant and a wax is more or less the same thing. A glaze is different.

Polish your car, glaze it then wax or seal it.

You can go wrong with the products I talked about above.

Was just using them to show you the stages of what way to go about doing it but all 3 are very good at what they do. Two coats of the hybrid should last 6 months or so depending on what shampoo you use.

Lime Prime and Black hole are the same thing! Both glazes that offer a small amount of cut and use fillers. Unless u mean lime prime light which is more a pre wax  cleanser.

Ha, don't blame the forum...blame the car.

I know what you mean though, I've only ever owned cheap "Wash and Wax" for cleaning my cars, no more.  Now I've got a decent Golf I suddenly find my garage shelves full of all sorts of Polish and Wax and Polishers and Glass Cleaners, with micro-fibre cloths everywhere.

And I've gone from a 6-monthly car-clean, usually at a Car-Wash, to doing it by hand every couple of weeks.   :nerd:

Mate you need to go and read up on what's what.

Lime Prime is a polish a bit like super resin it contains cutters and fillers. Can be used by hand or machine.

Black Hole is a glaze designed to hide minor imperfections by filling them it has no cut and adds depth to the shine.

Lime prime lite Contains no abrasives this is why differs from Lime Prime and is designed for soft paint or pre-polished surfaces. Handy if your car has been sprayed

Dodo call them a "pre wax cleaner" as thats what a polish is, cleans before you wax.

You have to admit though, it can get very confusing when you compare "Lime prime" to "Lime Prime", suggesting they're different!   :lipsrsealed:

Bloke on the dodo stand was tellin me that lime prime and black hole are pretty much the same, but black hole is slightly better on dark cars... But I still got the lime prime (don't ask) and also got the super natural hybrid wax.... Not used any of it yet waiting till weather gets a bit better!!!!

It is a lightly abbrasive polish with a lot of fillers and it also contains a light sealant like Lime prime, black hole has no cut.

Mate, you need to read the post properly before getting on your high horse!

I said Lime prime Lite was more like a pre wax cleanser, exactly because it has no cut!

The definition of a Polish, Pre wax cleanser, and glaze are all different, yet all manufacturers call them whatever they like as most offer a bit of everything.

All glazes/cleansers offer something slightly different from the other. Be it more cut, more filling, or more glazing. One will be better than the next for something. Some will also be better for different coloured cars, and different finish. (Flat/mettalic/Pearl etc). Its about finding whats best for your particular car.

Now go have a cold shower.

I'm no expert, but I would say probably not.  From what I've read, I think you'd need to sort out the laquer peel first.  If it's bad it could require a respray to get it looking great again.

You can polish the car but avoid the peel area...you will burn right through.

waxes - heavy duty wax is the way. Dont get sucked into the expensive waxes. Its just silly!

Call me lazy (and an amateur if you will) but all I've done with my car since new is wax her twice a year with Chemical Guys, XXX Hardcore Paste Wax. Incredible product! Leaves my paintwork protected. Rain beads up even months after application. Smells beautiful too.

Just call me Mr Half-a-Job
