Hi there,
My car seems to be making a horrible squeeking noise when taking off from first / reverse (goes away once driving just happens from standstill) been doing a few searches and seems that most people seem to think its something to do with a throwout bearing and or attached slave cylinder ? Im no expert at car mechanics but is this something I should be worried or concerend about ?
People have said that dealers regard this noise as normal and as doesnt affect the car are very reluctant to fix under warranty, has anyone had similar and got it fixed or is it something I could look at doing myself ?
Found a youtube vid showing the noise exactly as it sounds in my car Clicky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WPWQE_rkkWM)
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated as currently feel like a right bork everytime I pull off with my car squeeling away.
Regards,
Plaul

If my car sounded like the one in the video I'd have it to the dealers and fixed under warranty for sure.

Mine has done this since about 6 months old but only in reverse (I have a steep drive). Had the VW technician reverse it up and down the drive to reproduce the noise, they had it for a week and couldn't (or wouldn't) sort it saying eventually that it's a characteristic of the car. Doesn't seem to affect anything adversely and mines done this for the last 3 years.
If you're still in warranty get it into the dealers and see what they say.

Hi,
I have that noise as well on my GTi when pulling away in 1st gear albeit only occasionally
. The car is going in to the dealer shortly for an end of warranty check soon so I will ask them to investigate it although intermittent faults are are always difficult to detect.
I also have moisture in the foglight and excessive road noise to be looked at.
Will be interested to know what is causing that horrible noise and if there are other GTI's with the same problem.

Mine makes that noise too, usually only in the morning when starting the car in cold conditions and in both 1st and reverse gears. It only started making this noise over the past 6 months.
The VW monkeys eventually put it down to 'rust' but said that there is nothing that they can do about it. I intend to escalate this further when my GiT goes in for service in 2 months

Ill join in, mine does exactly the same. I didnt realise this was a common fault!
I took mine to the volkswagen specialist to see what they said and they claimed it was my brakes, so i inspected the brakes myself and didnt find anything.
May have to take it to the stealers and see if they will be willing to do anything.

Premium brand.....

It sounds like the noise mine made ( happens when moving of on a hill and at about 2300 rpm ) it was still under warranty so took it to local vw dealer and after a chat with the mechanic it was traced to a faulty clutch plate it was repaired under warranty i think it is a common fault

I have the same problem with my just purchased 09 plate, second hand 36000 miles from a dealer, took a test drive and everything felt fine with the car, about a week later pulled off slowly in 1st and that's when the metal grinding/low whine started,it happens on most start off's and is worse when on an incline, went back to the dealer and told him to sit in the car with me to hear the noise and sods law,the car wouldn't make the noise ,dealer gets out the car and i drive off,get a few miles down the road, pull up at a give way and bamm, there's the noise, will be taking the car back next week and hopefully the car performs for me,found a clip on youtube that is identical to mine,Vw gti defective throw out bearing.

My car has also done this one or twice when the car is cold and has been standing for a long time, its not when you brake its when you slowly pull off. :undecided:

Just wondered if anyone has a definitive answer to this issue, before I take mine in for a service....?

I had my car in today and mentioned this as one of the points I wanted the dealer to look at as I get a squeak frequently when pulling away in first gear when the car is cold in the morning in both first and reverse. It was probably worse on colder days.
The outcome is a new clutch. Looks to be an issue with the friction plate, possible manufacturing defect.

Thanks Andy and just in time, as mine goes in next Wednesday
I'll let you know if my lot agree following inspection.

Right, they can hear the noise but cannot diagnose it, so have done nothing to correct
They don't think that I have the above clutch issue, but have logged the problem on their system so if in future the cause is found, the work would be carried out under warranty conditions.
Argh, so frustrating

may as well join in the club. I tend to get this issue when setting off from cold. It doesn't tend to happen from warm starts.
I had a feeling it may be a clutch issue. I would be interested to see if anyone gets it resolved.

Mine seems to have been resolved when they replaced the clutch. I've done a couple of thousdand miles now on the new one and no noise.
