Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue before I approach VW. Wheels have covered approx 10k miles and have been religiously cleaned every week and have been waxed at least once a month, not sure if pics will show just how bad it is and all four have gone the same.

You don't park near a railway line do you?
About a thousand years ago I used to have to park near a railway station and my (at the time) white mk1 GTI used to get covered in this brown rash that looked a lot like that.
It turned out to be brake dust from trains (like tiny bits of iron) that pitted the paint.

Is it definately pitting or something stuck to the surface? I'd try claying them first to see if anything comes off, if not straight down the dealers!! >:(

I thought it could be fallout but there's no sign elsewhere so don't think it's that?

I'm worried that it won't be perfect tho, 70 quid for it to be refurb, also thinking of having rear diffuser gloss black whilst there

This is why I love this forum, one wheel clayed and issue sorted. Calm has been restored in the Ginge household.

get some iron x on that wheel then seal them with some decent wax
that looks like brake dust and dirt contamination
iron x will take that off easy enough and f the wheels are sealed it shouldnt happen again really

i also did my GTI bodywork a couple of weeks back and my car is bloody ridiculously clean and it still removed some fallout
iron x is really good stuff, especially as a wheel cleaner. it really stinks though :sick:

I just fine it a bit weird that I maintain mine in exactly the same way and have never had an issue? They'll all get clayed tomorrow and then sealed so fingers crossed no repeats.

I found that the black painted wheels on my GTD suffered from this and thought it was bits of brake pad that then adhere to the the surface.
As you are waxing your wheels, the hot metal will melt the wax then it will set hard again (albeit at microscopic level!) which makes them a bugger to remove with just washing.
As Ken says, look at Iron X or Auto Finesse do a tar and fall out remover - well worth it.

I'm so tempted to get some iron-x, it looks like amazing stuff but i just can't understand how something that will desolve metal particles won't damage anything on the car?? :shocked: you'd think it would at least bleach some plastic?? :huh:

Get it to Lepsons, they do a absolutely fantastic job, my shadow came back good as new...you wudnt know its been refurbed if I didn't tell you and it only cost £85 inc vat..

you just leave it on for a few minutes then wipe off with soapy water and thoroughly rinse then wash the car as normal and do your usual polish/glaze/wax etc
it doesnt affect any rubber trim - it did strip the fledge stift off though, but it may have been the tar remover which did that as i de-tarred the car after iron x
its certainly safe to use but will strip the wax off of course.

Looks quite a bit better, maybe iron x them then? Although the orange peel is terrible on those! :o I don't think my Monza's are like that.

Yeah I've always questioned that but never done anything about as I've never owned a car with black wheels and thought it was normal?
