Anyone used one (a neutral density variable filter), any ideas and brands? or should I just buy some non-variable ones. Just realised the 77mm ones and 77mm polariser doesnt fit my 82mm 16-35mm mk2. Doh.

i use hoya pro 1 filters. some good deals to be had on amazon. can't say whether you'll get an 88mm one though.

In a variable neutral density?

In a variable neutral density?
you want this;
http://www.hoyafilter.com/hoya/products/ndfilters/variabledensityfilter/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-Variable-Density-Screw-In-Filter/dp/B007RLXPTI
Personally I stack mine (normal ND filters) if I need to go beyond the scope of one.
You also might want to consider the lee or cokin solutions too, screw in filters are great but have to be combined with step down rings to offer value, however the slot in solutions offer very little portability so depends on the intended use.
In reality you'll end up with both solutions eventually.
