Just wondering what the crack is with sickness days for work?
Had half a tooth knoked out around a year ago and the nerve got infected. having a root canal next week and just phoned up the hr lady to be told if i want the day off i have to take a days holiday. Or make my time up.
now i wouldnt be botherd about making time up. but as its in the middle of the day it would mean a hour drive to work. two hours at work. hour drive back. few hours at dentist. Hour drive back to work 2hours there and then a hour drive back. now i cant be arsed with four hours of driving in one day and still being down on my flex time at the end of the day. and ive been told its quite painfull so will need the day off anyway.
i dont think its right that just because im getting it done at the dentist i cant take a sick day. Yet if i got the same treatmwnt done at the hospital i can.
Anybody else had the same problem? Anything i can do? Or is it just a casr of waste a days holiday

Do you get paid for sick days?
I don't get bad for sick days so would rather use a holiday and going sick doesn't look good on record.

I am very rarely off sick in fact maybe only 3 times in the last 6 years but i certainly wouldn't take it as holiday if i was, thats just crazy !
Personally i would take a day off sick for the dentist or expect any of my staff to i would try get the appointment late afternoon so i had to take minimal time out of work ( i also travel about 45 mins to work)

Make it back up if you are on flexi time.
Get there half hour early, and leave half hour later and there is an hour a day straight away. let's say doing that 5 days in the next two weeks and you should have no issues.

not had many sick days in the last 5 working years (1 month after 5 days of working cause i had to have an operation to have plates put in my shoulder, 2 days cause i got attacked and hit over the head with a brick a few times, and about 3 days cause i was genuinly sick)
and was not possible to get any other apointment, the next appointment which he had time to do a root canal was the middle of june by which point he said the tooth would have proberbly fallen out.

ive already stuck a days holiday in and sorted it out, just doesent seem right to me that if i got the treatment at the hospital im aloud the day off but because im having it done at the dentist im not.

If this really is the case, then highlight it to them, and offset it against all the hours that are already owing to you then.

If you work for an organisation that is big enough to have a HR department then there must be a local policy on sickness, ours is that they give you up to 4 hours for these kind of appointments.

So if you're working past the office hours then you are either getting paid overtime or are entitled to time owing ?.If you get sick pay then you don't need to take a days holiday,thats sounds to me like HR dictating to you what you can and can't have.If you hadn't told anybody and just phoned in sick then i expect that you would have been paid as normal ???

these days a lot of employers are arseholes about this stuff.
one way round it is to just make it known that you're very unhappy with the situation.
i took a couple days off sick once and they deducted my wages. a quick word in the directors ear, '2 days is 6 months and you want to deduct me for it?' and i soon got my dough back.

It is often down to the relationship you have with your boss/company and what you put in to the company, HR generally tow the line and enforce a no pay policy until approved by department head/Director.
Just speak with your boss and try not to get wound up in the meantime.
We do appointments first thing or in the evening so as to not interrupt to much of the working day.
Be thankful you don't work systems like the Bradford factor and have lateness wound up in there as well.....
