As above? I'm looking at a gt tdi but not sure which to go for. I've always had manual cars, and only had two experiences with autos, my sister 1.6 megane scenic :sick:, and a new 5 series BMW :cool:. Not sure which to for? Any adivce? Experiences? Things to looks for? :undecided:

Dsg is amazing. Just make sure it's been we'll looked after or be prepared to spend £££

If you've always had a manual...time to try DSG :wink:
DSG will be better than the autos you have previously tried...I take it the BMW Auto you tried was the new 8 speed Steptronic? I have heard Steptronic is decent.
The DSG Gearbox requires an oil and filter change every 40k. Double check a car has the history or if it's due.
The gear changes up or down should be smooth and without any 'clunk' or strange noises...
Check the gearbox in all positions.
Check the gearbox in paddle mode.
Also the display should show which gear position you are in at all times (D,S etc) and what gear you are in (1,2,3 etc).

Another quick question, I've been doing some reading, and I read that the early gt tdi models with DSG don't have the wheel paddles only the manual override on the gear stick. Is this true? And if so is it easy to retro fit a wheel with the paddles?

i love DSG, i cannot believe how quick it is and how smooth it is, the only thing i really miss, is in a sports car, when you do a hard gear change, how it feels to be thrown back in your seat again, but the speed of dsg is just awesome!! :laugh:

im still divided on this. i have a DSG, i do miss changing my own gears, yeh i can do it with the paddles or gear stick but its still not as ,i guess ...connected? as manual. Dont get me wrong the DSG is amazing, when i bought my car i wanted the paddles because i wanted a toy that i could use everyday (i dont own a different car) and has deffinatly impressed, and I deffinatly couldnt change gear the way DSG does, drive both see how you feel.
also on another note it says up there about strange noises. youtube the DSG fart. that isnt something to worry about and you will hear it every now and again, probably not on ur test drive. but when u do hear it, it'll put a grin on ur face (after you know its harmless)
and yeh its true some early models didnt have the paddles, no idea how easy it is to retrofit.

GTI DSG owner here but having spent a few months with it the novelty has worn a little thin. It's a great system and it almost works flawlessly except it's a little slow to react in certain situations such as three point turns and changing down, theres a pause while you have to wait for the gear to select. In normal driving this isn't a problem but if you're like me and lead a hectic busy life it can get a little tedious and you could find yourself missing the level of driver input that a manual offers.
With that said, the transition through the gears is nothing short of superb if not genius. It's nothing like any other automatic out there. If you haven't driven a car with DSG then you should, just to witness the smoothness and pace of the car as it accelerates. If there ever became a situation were i really need an automatic, then i wouldn't hesitate to choose another DSG system. However i'm not there yet, so will be opting for a manual come next upgrade. Good luck.

I think most things are covered. The main thing though is if you're buying a TDI I presume it's for long journeys? If so the DSG comes into its own. Motorway changes and quick drops to accelerate in D are just so much easier and yes lazy but it means you can relax. If you were retrofitting I presume a full MFSW would be needed. May be have a look over on mkvgti.co.uk. as I'm sure on them will have changed. I think Awesome GTI used to offer this as well...call N ask, they may at least say it possible and how...I know you couldn't use em as to far away mind.
And my opinion is I like both. I miss the connection when changing for corners, and my left foot still doesn't like the foot rest position. :laugh:
If remapping the car the DSG can be a weak point in comparison to manual but DSG remaps are also available

Thanks for all the info! :afro: I guess the only thing left to do is go test drive both. My only problem is that I'd only get DSG if it had paddles :tongue: because then I think it would feel better and more fun to drive, if it didn't it would be like. Normal auto.

Ask Hurdy. I think his old ED30 was DSG and he was running 360+ by the end. Or search for his old thread
