what's the best 2.0l 8v to drop into my mk2? I want about 150bhp and that marvalous 8v low end grunt. What should I be scouring my local scappy for?
cheers

Just to let you know that i received the GOLF GTI badge THANKS! ;)
n i now what you mean about the marvalous 8v low end grunt... its nice!! ;D

Look out for a corrado 2.0, or mk3golf gti (either car 8v or 16v). You might be able to get the same bottom end from passats boras etc. I'm looking for a 2L bottom end for my 16v too! Should be a straight swap!

Audi 80 and Passat engines will fit and are cheap from the scrap yard. The engine breathers are different but if you are up to doing the swap this is not a prob. Steve.

hopefully a straight swap. I was just wondering what I should be hassling my local scappy for, ie, which car's 2.0. Is the wiring ok as I have the older K-jet in my mk2 atm.

150 bhp from a standard 2ltr 8v is going some ;). Use the 2ltr and your wiring etc, fit your head and dist and use the head gasket for the block. You may have to swap the gear from the 2ltr dis onto the 1800, keep us up to date as I have not done this swap but don't see any probs. Steve.

what about gearbox, etc?
I've got a few mates that know how to hook them up so i'll get onto them about it once I've found the engine.
how much should i be looking to pay for it?

I want this on my 16v, I know it's a straight swap and it wont affect ignition timing. How do u get the bigger capacity? Is it wider cylinders &pistons, or do the pistons just operate a bit lower?

I would get a 2000 16v from a passat or a corrado, using a 8v engine will be a lot of work as the belt pulleys and the oil pump drive shaft are different.
1800 engines are: bore 81X86.4mm stroke
2000 engines are: bore 82.5X92.8mm stroke
Pistons and stroke are different. Hope this helps, Steve.

You can either get the standard block you have bored and stroked or you can go for a bigger bottom end, the Mk3 use taller blocks and you may have problems with clearence on the bonnet.

I thought putting 2L bottom ends in mk2's was a very common mod I thought the bottom end was exactly the same fitting whether 8v or 16v head is put on. So if i wanted to do this conversion to my valver then I would need to find a bottom end from a 2L 16v VW???

Pistons in 16v engines are different to 8v due to valve clearance "pockets", so a 2000cc 16 valve engine would be the easy and cheapest option, A9 engine is almoast a direct swap.
-
for a 16v you want the 9A from a passat or corrado
or the 6E (i think) from an Audi
you just need the block, use your own 16v head & fuel injection & all ancilliaries
with the 9A its a straight swap - like for like
with the Audi block you need to use your oil lift & sump also as the Audi block is transverly mounted.

Well no , look at pictures of an 8 and 16V and you'll see that the 16V has a breather on the front of the block and the 8V doesnt as it uses the cam cover as its breather.
on an 8V I would get the engine bored and stroked to 2 litres and do a polished and ported head and better camshaft.
For a 16V it would have to be the 9A head and block as the 9A head has more meat on it so its better to polish and port when required. Fit the KR inlet cam and the inlet manifold and swap the throttle body and sensors over.
