Title: Starter motor screech

Had my starter motor making a slight screech after starting up for a long time now and heard here its just the norm (common fault) so just carried on until my car wouldn't start.
Anyway took it off, cleaned it up and greased. Also found the copper rope cable connecting motor to solinoid was about had it so replaced that, put it back on and job done.

The thing is i still get the screech :sad:
An Engineer at work said that sounds like one of your pulley's is loose or on its way out. I thought idiot its my starter motor :wink:
Obviously i'm the idiot as this maybe the cause.

Any truth in this pulley noise and how to fix please.

It's probably still your starter motor, mine was screeching when I started, I took it of cleaned and re-greased it, after a week it was making noise again. Just gonna bite the bullet and get a new starter.

Exactly same happened to me... After cleaning/greasing was fine for a few weeks but the dreaded screech is slowly coming back...

Not the sai pump is it?? Just thought I'd throw that out there as I haven't heard the noise!!

It is a common problem
I left mine untill it failed bought a new one....less than a year later it is screeching again I just ignore it  :laugh:

all mk4 golf screech when you start them its a normal sound.  :evil:

Wondering if there's any starter motors from another vag car that'll fit but not squeak! It's doing my head in, I get embarresed starting the car when people are about!

Mine used to do it hence my username ha,i know what you mean about starting it when people are about as its so loud it would make people jump,was quite funny really,new starter is the only fix really,my mates bora does it I still laugh every time I hear it.

go to your local VAG specialist and get them to order it in, if you want a real Bosch one your looking at about 130 to 140 fitted or about 90-110 bought and fitted yourself, i decided to go all out and get the best of the best and im 120 poorer for it and i fitted it myself, so far no screeches and its a year and 4 months and counting
