could be a number of things, theres been a few topics started in the last few weeks about this. 1st thing would be to search through the last few pages of this forum section. 2nd would be to scan the car for fault codes.

sorry to jump onto this thread but im having the same issue so thought for the price of a temp sensor might aswell do that since ive now done the MAF, Lambda, checked for air leaks, diverter valve and N75 and running out of stuff to do

just to confirm is this the temp sensor i need http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GREEN-Water-Temperature-Sensor-VW-Golf-Mk4-1-6-2-0-GTI-coolant-temp-sender-gauge-/400352006946?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d36d6d322 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GREEN-Water-Temperature-Sensor-VW-Golf-Mk4-1-6-2-0-GTI-coolant-temp-sender-gauge-/400352006946?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d36d6d322)

Have a look at the one you currently have fitted as there are a few different ones. If you've got one fitted with that shaped plug then it'll be fine.

I wouldn't expect one that cheap to last for very long, but it will give you an indication as to whether the temp sensor is at fault.

There is 2 temperature sensors on the mk4 , the one you'll need to change is a 4 pin sensor , mine I changed was green

Just to confirm that is the correct sensor but your best off getting one from a vw specialist dependant where your based i got a genuine one for £17 with the o-ring and also make sure you've for coolant or save you old and re use

cheers for the info i found a guide on how to do it plus one for the thermostat so gonna do both and ive ordered genuine parts. Figured even if it isnt the temp sensor causing it atleast i wont be replacing it in 2 months cause of a cheap part. should last me quite a while now and can rule it out totally. My exhaust did have a leak but it was patched and didnt help the mpg its possible the patch has popped again but would that cause the erratic idle aswell? and the cutting out?

Apart from the idling issues has it been difficult to start at times at all ?

Its refused to start twice i think but in general it will fire up straight after it cuts out or first turn of the key when cold

110 percent it's that temp sensor then

well new temp sensor on and still no change still idling erratically and cutting out when the clutch is dipped

So far ive done:

Lambda sensor 1 (cause it threw a fault code)
MAF
Diverter valve
Coolant temp sensor
Checked for vac/air leaks and cant find any even when system is pressurised

Im at my wits end and due to have a flaming car sat outside my gaff.

Group 032 figures are Idle -6.9% partial -7.8% which i think means vac leak but for the life of me i cant find it can anyone confirm that?

Gonna take the car a hefty long run tomorrow and figured ill do some logging while im at it so what groups should i be logging that can best point to my fault?

Hmm that's a strange one
I have had a vehicle in the past that's the throttle valve has been at fault , so I'd suggest cleaning out your throttle valve and possibly your idle control valve
The one I had I cleaned out the throttle valve in a parts cleaner
Title: Re: Need help car idleing erratically
Post by: novadragon007 on 19 February 2013, 21:53
sorry thats been done aswell throttle body cleaned and reset using vcds.

Ive just bought an agu chargepipe (turbo - intercooler) been reading alot about aum engines being guilty for leaking there. Is it just a straight swap for whats there?

Where is the idle control valve located?
Title: Re: Need help car idleing erratically
Post by: Bennmk3 on 20 February 2013, 06:37
Iirc , I think it's around the same area as the throttle valve

is there anything wrong with your electrics? stupid question but i had an issue when i had a Xtrons headunit, once fitted the car rev hunted DRASTICLY as in the revs would run up to 2000 then down to zero then back up and eventually cut out then it would start up again fine and sometimes it would start but with a plume of white smoke coming out of the exhaust, i then changes my headunit to this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KENWOOD-DPX-404U-CD-USB-RECEIVER-WITH-IPOD-IPHONE-WMA-CONTROL-STEREO-HEAD-UNIT-/150944206701?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item2324f9cf6d (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KENWOOD-DPX-404U-CD-USB-RECEIVER-WITH-IPOD-IPHONE-WMA-CONTROL-STEREO-HEAD-UNIT-/150944206701?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item2324f9cf6d)

and all those issues dissapeared, it was like the car had no issues what so ever to start with

I think the idle control valve is part of the throttle body so shouldve been done. It was a garage that did the throttle body so ill whip it off and clean it again for peace of mind.

funny you should mention stereo cause my jvc headunit has decided to stop working although the power light comes on so perhaps ill disconnect it and see if it helps.

My '53 AUM had been idling pretty rough (wasn't getting huge fluctuations in revs, but it wasn't at all smooth and was starting to get on my nerves) - I was also having dips in power in low revs and it was driving jerky in first and second gear.

I checked all my hoses, and it turned out the hose on top of the DV was ever so slightly loose, so I pressed it right down and tightened the clamp a little. While I was at it I also removed all the spark plugs and gave them a clean with carb-cleaner and checked the gaps (had to adjust 2 out of 4 as they were slightly too narrow). Car's been completely sweet since, so I don't know if it was a boost leak caused by the DV hose not being fully connected, or whether my spark plugs weren't in the best condition, but one of the two has sorted my problem.

Could be different to your problem of course, but with a rough idle it's surely worth checking the spark plugs - do you get any flat spots/loss of power, and is it jerky when you're driving at all or just at idle?

Once its off idle it does seem to go very well its just burning loads of petrol so im thinkin vac leak and boost leak. Ive hooked up a compressor and found my dv is leaking under pressure but its not the piston its the threads on the outlet tube that are leaking(its a cheap one so ill be replacing it again) but i cant find another leak, how big would the leak have to be to cause this or can the smallest of leaks show these symptoms?

Could a blocked injector cause the idleing problem

Could a blocked injector cause the idleing problem

i did think that at the beginning but surely a blocked injector would show throughout the rev range, nit sure what yours is like but mine has okay power over 1000 rpm.

Post by: Jazz-blue-Wayne on 21 February 2013, 07:22
It a little bit lumpy on idle when it's 800
Then revs up
I've booked it at r-tech see if an fix it
nick said it mite have bit of dirt in one
Title: Re: Need help car idleing erratically
Post by: novadragon007 on 21 February 2013, 09:33
well ive got all the stuff coming for a catch can install so im gonna do that to eliminate the pcv system, ill do the n249 bypass while im there and ive got an agu turbo to pancake pipe to fit that way i should have eliminated the likely culprits for vac leaks, after that ill have them check for a blocked injector lol
Title: Re: Need help car idleing erratically
Post by: novadragon007 on 23 February 2013, 10:33
well agu turbo pipe on and so far theres been no 17705 code so im feeling pretty confident thats gone but i am still getting the erattic idle and cut outs when clutch is dipped? Did r-tech get a look at your injectors?

was reading a post on ukmkivs and a couple of them have had surging and hesitation and a bit of idle problems, theyve managed to trace it back to a rocker cover gasket
http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/420787.aspx?PageIndex=6 (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/420787.aspx?PageIndex=6)
so was gonna do that next and rule it out aswell just need a torque wrench.

Not been to r-tech yet going on the 5th
Ive got a new rocker cover gasket as the old one is leaking
Going to do the in the week and change the oil to
See if it still does it
Title: Re: Need help car idleing erratically
Post by: novadragon007 on 23 February 2013, 13:05
well ive just done my oil dipstick tube which was in 2 bits  didnt notice till it came out was hanging by a thread and had a jolly old time getting the broken piece off the tube. Fixed my idle somewhat, only nearly cuts out now when i dip the clutch and the idle is a whole lot smoother so i reckon ive still got a vac leak there somewhere and i get the feeling its in the pcv system so thats a task for next week once all my catch can bits get here.

Ill get r tech to fix it for me
Do u know the torque for the rocker cover bolts mate

It could even be one of the 1 way valves in the PCV causing the idle problems,
Neighbours A4 had been into VW 4 times, they changed coil packs and so on, still no joy.
the car ended up at a local vw specialist who traced it to one of the little 1 way valves.

i think that's where mine is that's why im doing the catch an and gettin rid of most of those checkvalves.

this may or may not help but i have the AUM as well and had this issues around about Nov. i used redex petrol and oil cleaners etc and have had smooth running since, just filled according to instructions gave it a blast down the A12 for a couple of miles and havent had any issues since, for the sake of £10 it could clear most peoples issues

Now I've changed throttle body it idles ok when cold
then when it's wormed up it go's up and sits at 10,000 revs
