Title: GTI 16v fan not coming on?
Post by: Djmac on 15 February 2013, 11:10
Hi, ive had a few problems withthe cooling side of my gti 16v, ive just noticed the fan isnt coming on
Could it be a simple issue? Ive chexked the interior fuse no. 19 which is fine,
But is there a relay that triggers the fan, if so could anyone guide me too which one and a way of testing
It?

Thanks alot, dan

Check the fuse in the engine bay behind the battery.

Your fan control module is located underneath the expansion tank, there could well be a fault with that.

Ive checked the fuse located just below and in front of the expansion tank,
On the left is a 20amp and is fine, on the right there is a slot for fuse but nothing there,
Looks like its a blank? Anything else it could be in that area? Cheers

Ive taken the expansion tank off and unclipped and removed the
Box underneath! Seems like where the expansion tank has released
Water its got onto the connectors and caused some corrosion, is replacing
The box a good idea? If so has anyone got a working one going cheap, or
Is there anyway of testing it?

I think i may have shorted something as my car wont start? Fuel pump fuse and
Engine electronic fuse on the driver side fuse box are fine? Could it be somewhere else?

Check you havnt disturbed any relays above the fuses ,give them all a push home to make sure.

Ive pushed them all well in! Its turning over but no fire up! Not sure if its something to do with stupid alarm on it thats never worked! Its really baffled me???
Its gone from a simple fan fault to a pain in the arse! The alarm is the only thing i can think it would be but no one on here could help with that as its in a right state!
Is there anything else i can check before its certain to be the alarm!

Could this be an issue with the crank pick up sensor? read somewhere its a common fault with the ABF not starting? if so has anyone a picture of where this sensor is? Cheers

The sensor is up behind the oil filter,i would have a look at getting it plugged in for fault codes it may shed some light on this,it is strange that it was running ok till you started looking at the fan issue though  :undecided:

Ive solved the starting issue, turned out it was my coil lol! Must have been on the blink then finally went! Hopefully solve the bogging issue i had at 3k! I got told by a mechanic that it could be as simple as the sensor in the rad thats causing the fan not too come on? Anyone had this issue? Could it be a thermostat issue? Is it easy to change a thermostat on the 16v? Thanks for the feedback, much apreciated! Dan

Does the gauge sit in the middle once its warmed up properly?, if so your thermostat is fine and if you need to change it then its a bit fiddly but fairly straightforward.
It could be the fan temp sensor on the rad or even the fan motor itself.

bogging issue at 3k could be ECU relay

Im waiting for my new rad, sensor and fan to arrive! Im also waiting for my new coil as that is why it wouldnt start! One i have them put on ill run it out and see where the temp is staying aswell as seeing if the bogging issue is there! Thanks alot been a great help!

I'd do the thermostat too while your doing the rad then you know its good and you won't have to drain the cooling system twice.

There is a video on youtube, which shows how to check if fan is working.

Thanks for the video link, great help! Tested the fan like in the video and the 2 speeds work! Does this diagnose why the fan isnt coming on at temp? Thanks again

I'm not sure on this one, but can it not be the temp sensor thats in the flange in front of engine.

wait for someone to confirm this, like i've said i ain't sure on this
.   :lipsrsealed:

On second thoughts, I think your fan switch is faulty, Have you replaced this??

I haven't replaced anything yet? i've baught a radiator and fan combo, the rad comes with the sensor in, but im not sure of what switch you mean? Cheers

I have my doubts on the fan control module, Its located under the coolant bottle.

I was told that could be the issue, i have had it off and it doesnt look to clever! Seems like a worthy investment to replace!

That is the only thing i can think of tbh. You've tested the fan manually and it works on both speeds, so there isn't a problem there.

You've checked the fuses too and they are OK.

So yeah, I would say replace the fan module.

put a new coil, fan relay and ECU relay on the golf! But i have an issue... When it came to fillin the rad system up, i found i have the dreaded heater matrix issue! footwell full of water! ive read about this and seems like the only way is to take the dash out? But is this really the only way, surely a hose has just unclipped or something? Can i just un plug the hoses from in the bay and join them together and sack of my heating lol?

Thanks again for all the help
Dan
