and DONT DRIVE THE CAR .
at a guess the spring has snapped , or come off the lower strut mount.
it could take out your brake lines or could puncture your tyre.
-
New top mount required?
-
top mounts are new?
-
The shaft should not be able to pass through the lower part of the mount ,was the new mounts quality? febi etc
I can never remember how these things are put together until im doing them doh
-
febi bilstein ones, renewed a couple of days ago
-

Search what lol i didnt know how to describe it?
-
Circlip failed. See post above your last.
-
Great chaps cheers
-
it says that coilovers dont need the circlip?
-
I take it you running coilovers then. You must have missed something on assembly then like a small washer,im not to familiar with coilovers sorry bud.
-
where abouts would the washer go, i vaguely remember there being one on the other side lol
-
Coil over spring cap and bolt should stop that happening.
By the way you only need to undo the top nut to change mounts. They pull of and push on. Can't go wrong :lipsrsealed:
-
Pull it off bud and get a few pics up if it is not apparent whats wrong.
-
When you fit coilovers they don't come with the little domed spring cap fitted, just take them off your old struts, undo the bottom top nut on the piston and put your cap on then the nut on top then the top mount bush that locates under the arch... then the other half of the top mount bush goes on the inside of the car and the big flat washer on top then the topmost nut on the piston.
-
What do you mean by domed spring cap mate?
-
On the rear struts you have a domed washer about the size of a 2p goes under the bottom nut on the piston, the bottom half of the top mount bushes then locate on to that.
-
Oh I see, reckon you could post a pic or diagram at all?
-
This is from a mk2 but they are more or less identical.

This can happen when 7 fails, happened to me a few years back.
Most likely red rusty
-
This is the washer that you need to take off your struts and put on the coilover, they don't usually come with them fitted.

-
I don't think I have a number 21 lol
-
Coilovers won't have that, they will have a small top plate that goes above the top spring, then a small metal tube then a nut.

Where abouts does this go on coilovers mate?
-
Goes on top of the small metal tube under the bottom-most nut, the bottom bush then sits on top of it.
-
Ahh I thought that went under the upper top mount?
-
Gavv8 do you run coiovers?
