Hi Guys
Bit of advice please
Noticed 2 days ago that my Temperature Gauge is very slow moving and never really went upto 90, I did 36 miles yesterday in one sitting and it still didnt hit the 90, not sure if it would be the sensor or thermo or just normal? also im getting this annoying "ticking noise" like a watch behind my glove compartment / dash, have no idea what it is!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH its doing my head in now that im aware of it lol
Any advise would be welcomed on both guys
Thanks
Smithy

Change thermostat and temp sender
-
Change your thermostat
-
I'd change temp sensor first, if that doesn't fix it then change the thermostat.
-
I think thats what im going to do first, change the Temp sensor, on youtube just now to find a turoial im a novice at this stuff
-
Unplug , pull the c clip and remove, simples
I would say thermostat though, does it get to 90 ticking over without cabin blowers on?

Why spend the heard earned £10 (ish) when it's 99% the thermostat that's stuck open and confiming is really easy?
1. Idle with heaters off. - Should hit 90.
2. Really cold heaters.
3. A drive drops it but not to 0.
Those basically confirm a knackered thermostat.
4a. Replace stat.
4b. Spend the £10 on beer.
Call yourself a yorkshireman?

I have the same here lol went to tps yesterday to get oil asked about the stat and o ring £28
not paying that only £7 on ebay
-
There has been loads of people on here saying the eBay ones are crap mate and only last about a month I played safe and got mine from VW for £28 at least u know its gona be ok mate

If your going to replace them. Use dealer parts. And yes replace both Thermosat and temp sender. No point doing one loosing coolant and then another days later and having to top up coolant again.
Buy cheap buy twice im sure thats been said enough times

I only suggested that because I currently have the same problem and I'm fairly certain mine is the Temp Sensor...my heaters blow hot regardless of what the temp gauge says.
Oh and I'm from Cumbria originally....the Yorkshire tightness hasn't rubbed off yet

Hi
Yes it does go to 90 if ive drove for a while and leave the car ticking over. would that indicate the thermo ot sensor?

It does reach 90 on idle
Heaters do warm - hot air
Driving does drop the readiing by one bar
-
my last mk4 never hit 90. it always sat just below even on the warmest of days. I didn't worry about it personally. the heaters were always hot enough for me.

It's not just the heaters though, it can cause the car to run rich as well as having a rough idle

It still indicates thermo to me mate ,I brought mine from eurocarparts for my 1.8t think it was £16, when my temp sensor failed the gauge was all over the place.
