Title: E36 BMW gravel shed
Post by: Diamond Hell on 11 February 2013, 20:45
Funny thing happened after work. I went to Clanfield and picked up a 325i coupe to get home instead of taking the train home.

Sills seem solid, although the OS one's been patched at the front.  Oh well.

Came with some history:

Stereo's currently playing music from my phone:

Came with some spares:

Which include four pins that fit into the jacking points so you can put it on axle stands (the guy was a tool-maker).

Oh and it also has a spare set of wheels, same as on the car:

Apparently two are bent.  Oh well.  I'll get over that.

And it's taxed until April and MOTed until August.

On the way back the ABS light came on and a CHECK light, with the check system whining about something to do with the brake light circuit.  I'll live.

£350.

Divided between three of us.  Sideways stress-relief is going to be investigated, to see how effective it is at reducing stress.  If it isn't placed into the trees then it might get taken to a drift day at some point.

Goes well.  Stops well.  Seems to start OK too.

The diff needs some attention.

Bloody hell, is the train that expensive these days?

Yes and all you get is a sh*tty piece of paper at the end of it.

And unless something's gone VERY wrong they don't go sideways.

Let's get it welded, this IS going to be fun

Let's get it on the ramp and check it over first, eh?  Once that's done and we find anything that might pull our pants down and spank us unexpectedly, then we'll weld the diff up.

Sump guard to get sorted, too.

The diff needs some attention. Welding

..and put some black tape over the warning lights, or remove them...otherwise they will be forever bleating at you like a wife who wants more allowance.

More Drift Goons

Into a local workshop tonight for a once-over:

Front ARB bushes replaced:

Drop-linkage:

And let's get things straight:

Toe being toed out:

uh uh - nice leathers:

This wants a sump guard:

It is pretty clean:

Although it's got a bit of pox on both sides, in the same place:

Essential bit of kit applied:

Here's a pain in the ass:

Which has led me to a £140 policy, which might keep this on the road up til August.

Now insured for around £200 after a bit of to and fro and I wouldn't recommend ever bothering with Performance Direct for insurance, even if they do come out cheapest - guess what - can't complete the payment for the policy online, so go to phone and up jumps the policy.

Went with Be Wiser for insurance.  All good.

Have now spent some time at the helm of this thing, starting to learn RWD, which is great fun. Definitely needs some limitation in the slip of the diff.  Can't do donuts without it.

Folks had their camper with performance direct and they were a pita.

Must be something in the air as a friend picked up a 328 yesterday for he same reason

What's the waterpump like on this? Me mates shat itself / broke the impeller etc which is apparently a common fault because they're plastic.

Colour preferences not really on the radar for us, especially given the activities of certain people over this weekend.....

Did some work on this tonight.

Stripped off some plastic underneath, took the front bumper off, found support welding points, cut and drilled tabs and cut down the steel for the undertray.

Also released the bolts on the tank straps and copper-slipped them and wound them back in, ready for a steel skin to be put on them to protect that.

Can't go titting about on gravel without protection, now, can we?

And we were joined by some hairdressers who swiftly got hot and bothered and had to retire early for a colouring session (or something).

Let the steering wheel do what it wants. Really dont need to spin it that much. Just let go and then hold it when your sliding

Errr, OK.  We're not going for smooth and fast here, so maybe I'll just have fun with it.

Screen grab from a video from last night, with our tame AA Man at the wheel and a victim in the passenger seat:

Yes I know. Im saying when it steps out, let the wheel slip through your hands. You dont need to spin it like a mad man. Same when it straightens up.
Let it slip through your hands then hold it when you want to hang the arse out. And hold it when it comes back straight.

You've been given bad advise mate.

Right, so let's get this straight:  Have you driven on gravel? You've posted a tarmac drifting video which is quite different to driving on a loose surface.

It's 'advice' by the way.

Yes done  a rally driving day. They show you how to drive on gravel in fwd 4wd rwd
Title: Re: E36 BMW gravel shed
Post by: Diamond Hell on 16 July 2013, 08:06
You've spent some time on one day driving on some gravel (probably on gravel-specific tyres) and you're dispensing advice on what I should do by posting a drifting video?

For now I think I'm going to go with the advice 'keep the wheels pointing in the direction you're going' and the advice from my own internal monologue of 'do enough steering to keep the car on the track'.

In the interim you should get busy telling all those rally drivers on Youtube sawing on the wheel that they're doing it wrong.
Title: Re: E36 BMW gravel shed
Post by: Sam on 24 July 2013, 10:08
I had the exact same problem in my farm truck, 4wd drifting is awesome... until you have to snap out of it then its 'spinspinspinspin'... gets tiring very quickly. I bought one of these, you did get arm ache after a while but that was in a jacked up early 80's hilux. Im sure the bimmer is much lighter

Reasonably sure that depends whose driving it

That wheel looks like a 'forklift' modification.

Yes it does depend who's sawing on the wheel, doesn't it Dave 'Fishtail' Morris.

They're either a forklift mod, or a trialer mod, or a disability mod.

As the weather has dried out the BMW has been pulled back out.

This diff has too much movement in it:

You replace the input and drive seals while it was out?
Also there is a breather hole on the back plate on the top right. Make sure thats not blocked as the pressure can can lead to premature seal failure.

Does it look like it?!

During testing yesterday nothing seemed to be leaking, so it'll be fine.

Yes, he really is barely moving here, unlike the wheels
