20

4x4+4x4=32
+4=36
-4x4=20

320

The one above seems wrong, i was taught that for that to be correct it would have to be (4x4)+(4x4)
So you'd have to work each sum out first and then add them together.

But there's no brackets anywhere so literately must just have to do it how it looks. Could easily be wrong though.

Thats how I done it, no brackets so say it as you see it.

260 with BODMAS?

4*4*4*4+4+4-4=260

20

4x4+4x4=32

as said it would only be 20 if the sums were in (brackets)
Title: Re: How many can get this right?
Post by: Ridg on 11 February 2013, 16:08
it's 20

the only way you can make it anything other than 20 is inferring some imaginary brackets e.g.
320

How?

4x4(16)+4(20)x4(80)+4(84)-4(80)x4(320)

which is actually (((((4x4)+4)x4)+4)-4)x4

the correct way is to do the multiplication then the addition / subtraction

4x4+4x4+4-4x4=???

+16
+16
+4
-16

the +16 and -16 cancel out so you're left with +16+4 = 20

put it into any decent calculator and you get the same result.

^ correct by my reckoning as well. Had forgot how to do this tho, and I wondered what excel would make of it...

I put it into the calculator straight away as it was down and it came up with 20. All this talk of brackets is making my head sore.

260 with BODMAS?

4*4*4*4+4+4-4=260
That's not how you use bodmas.

Bodmas means you follow the order which is:

1. Brackets - none here
2. Order - none here
3. Divisions - none here
4. Multiplications

4x4+4x4+4-4x4 becomes 16+16+4-16

5. Addition

16+16+4-16 becomes 36-16

6. Subtraction

36-16=20

IMO due to the lack of brackets defining the actual sums both 20 and 320 are correct...

Neither is wrong but neither is right as the perimeters of the sum have not been defined... :P :P :P

No you are wrong

Swap the number 4 for 1

so

4x4+4x4+4-4x4 => 1x1+1x1+1-1x1

because you only have 1x it's the same as 1+1+1-1 which we all know is actually 3-1 = 2

anyone that still thinks the answer is anything other than 20 here's some primary school maths;

+1 for me. 320.
