Title: Gutted
Post by: simonfa on 10 February 2013, 18:29
Totally gutted!

Tyre deflation on a roundabout at 35mph.... Kerb and armco seconds later!

Does anyone have any dealings with Classicline insurance?

That don't look that bad mate. wing, bumper and maybe a grill would you put it through the insurance if that's all it is? Just remember it could have happened on a corner when you where going faster and ended up with more damage.

I fear it may be worse than it looks, cant open the bonnet and it now looks like the lower metal work is pushed back in where the towing eye is, also the metal work for the bumper thats on the car is now off center by about 100mm. In retrospect i should have let the car spin as i had the room but knee jerk reaction was to try and save it, i did twice then all of a sudden it snapped and it went into the kerb. Could have been a lot worse though like you say. Reason i was thinking of insurance is because my excess is only £100 with no volentary excess and its gonna cost me a fair bit more than that just to source the bits and thats wiothout spraying to the correct colour

Insurance will write it off for sure
There's enough people breaking  mk2s for you to put it right cheaply

Keep the faith dude.
Could be far worse, get the front end off and start again. Plenty of parts about to sort her out. DONT SCRAP IT!!!

get the bumper iron off and the wing then see how bad it is, youll probably need a wing a slam panel and a grille. it dosnt look that bad really.

yeah dont bother with classic line, they will write it off for sure, itd cost you less than £100 to get it roadworthy again.

paint will be the most expensive part unless you find an oakey breaking.

even if you are not too handy with the spanners its not a hard fix.

you need to asses the chassis leg first and go from there.

Just make sure you have a good look at her before you do anything. Me and a mate fixed one the other week with a few tools that was hit harder on that corner.

Well had my first quote to repair the damage.... £1200... Seems not only the asthetic parts were damaged, coilover bent drivers side, coilover spring broken near side, camber is out, steering arm, anti roll bar, power steering pump bracket, control arm, engine mount and all the plastic covers. Needless to say the insurance want to write it off and give me market value!!! Doh Not even sure what that is until the guy from the insurance company comes out and tells me.

Damn! So chassis leg has moved?

Well apparently the sub frame and the chassis is fine, the crumple zones on the leg dont seem to have moved at all, still the same width both sides and no visible crumpling in the wheel arches or anywhere else.

Actually have spoken to the insurance company and they are sending out an indipendant assesor tomorrow (Thursday) to have a look and give me a market value for a like for like.... Anyone wanna hazard a guess lol

In that case it's perfectly savable and for a lot less than £1200! Now that insurance is involved it'll no doubt be scrapped tho

As the insurance have an independant assesor coming out i wont have to go through the insurance if he believes its a right off, i can choose to do the work myself and i will have to buy the bits and fit them myself as and when monies allow. As its an independant company it will not put a mark against the car should i choose not to have it written off

Long story short, they want to write it off.... They want to give me market value (£1500) minus my 100 excess. Then they have offered me to keep the car at a cost... Wait for it........ £315..

What do you think?

I still don't get why you have to pay them for a car you own. Insurance is such a con.

So we pay insurance and in the small print it says "if you crash, we then own your car and you pay us to get it back"

WTF is insurance for. Tell them to shove it. Might as well do an injury claim and screw them

I really dont know what to do! I love the car.. Obviously, ive done lots of work on her inc fitting a 9A engine and dont want to lose the car. Simple fact is im finding it hard to buy the parts i need for less than £500! I will basically come out of this with £1085 and my car but it will be a catagory C and it will be on the history of the car so may find it hard to insure, not only that but i have to get a new MOT to prove its ok and road worthy, pay the guy to assess the car again and its all out of my pocket and this is all before labour costs and spraying of bumper and panels! Sad times....

Well speaking from experience with the wife's car cat c is a nightmare
Wife's car was cat c so I bought it back repaired it then had to vic check it then re mot it once all that was done nobody would insure it cause it was cat c. When I finally found someone who would insure it they insisted on an independent engineers report and the premium costs were twice what we paid before. 12 month later and it got wrote of again ( taxi driver) and insurance asseser priced it at bottom book because it was already cat c so was worth nothing.
Think long and hard before you commit to buying it back and all the hassle that goes with getting it back on the road

Buy it back, take your bits and pieces off it and scrap it/sell it as a track shell. With the cash you've been offered you'll be able to buy another.

Pretty much resigned to the fact this is the way i will have to go now. Idea is to buy another valver and use the good parts off mine, the 9a engine swapped over then break my beloved car. Just need the money to buy a new one first!
