Title: High mileage gt tdi's?
Post by: murraymint on 09 February 2013, 14:13
Hi. I'm looking at getting a mk5 gt tdi. My budget is about 5/6k. My question is what things to look out for and also. How good are the engines that have high miles on them?

1.9's are slow

2.0 140's have chocolate turbo's and certainly the Audi A3 with the same engine suffered from porus cylinder heads; not sure about the MK5 itself  :undecided:

Not much apart from that though

Ok thanks, yh was looking at the 2.0 140s. How expensive is the turbo to replace if it went Pete tong?

Brand new units are approx £500 plus fitting.  The replacement ones are much stronger though

Yeah those are average figures.  Some do make more but its dependent on how fit the engine is

Makes sence. Would put more pressure on the chocolate turbo also?

Depends how its mapped. Some throw a load of boost at it; others only increase it by a minimal amount

Ah right, so what gains would I see from a map that doesn't overload the turbo?

Another quick question, I'm looking at the 8p Audi A3 with the same tdi engine, I'm I looking out for the same problems with these?

We're definitely thinking along the same lines,  Murray.  Mk5 GT TDI's are my alternative choice to a Leon TDI FR.

:afro:  good choice

my line of thort was a new shape Leon fr, but then thort the mk5 is cheaper and nicer inside. I did look at the mk1 fr but think I prefer the mk5, but now looking at the newer shape a3 as there the same money  :undecided: eather way don't think il have my gti at the end of the year

Same horse, different jockey.  Although the Audi's seem to have well documented head gasket problems  :undecided:

Look on Audi Sport for all the info on that as it tells you what part numbers to look for etc etc

Some info here too

Cheers again Rhyso! Do the 170 tdi suffer from the crappy heads too?

Think I might have to look at a newer mk5 Insted  :undecided:

Nope; just dodgy injectors (solved under recall) and DPF problems although thats because the sensors fail and people actually clog up the filters by driving as per the manual. With a knackered sensor though you are making things worse

I do 40 miles a day and that's on A/B roads so i don't think PDF would be a big problem, although you can get them removed right? So do you reckon it would be better getting a 170 and then sorting the injectors (if not already done) ?

Well I drive a 170 so what do you think

DPF removed + remap = 205bhp / 320lbs ft torque

Yh gunna be about 5/6k, could go to 6.5k, probably be easier to find a 170 golf for the money

Prepare to be dissappointed then as decent cars will start at 7k unless you want galactic mileage

I know, that's why I was looking at a 140 first  :undecided:

This is *exactly* why I posted in my earlier thread about head porosity. I've seen the Audisport threads amongst others regarding the Audi A3 (and any other Audi range with the BKD engine) but almost none in any VW forums.... Weird.
Son's still looking for a late 140 in the £5-6.25K range tho - Ignoring 04's through 55's, even if they're low mileage with all the extras - It's hard!

2 questions to those in the know (Rhyso?) :-

Why do some GT Tdi's actually have GT on the rear hatch and front grille and others just Tdi on the rear end???

And should the engine ancillary drive belt tensioner 'vibrate' up and down whilst running?? I seem to remember my 150 Bora have the same thing and being told the tensioner needed replacing??
Just that we've seen one or two with this happening.
Cheers

Dont read too much into the badging thing. It was mainly what dealers had in the box!!  Equally I think VW UK introduced a GT Sport around 57/08 plates which co incided with a minor facelift.  They got darker headlights and a few other bits and bobs

2nd issues im not sure of sorry  :undecided:

Cheers Rhyso, thought as much. I've asked in the garage re the tensioner.
And good luck Murraymint with the search
