There are loads with different adapters on ebay. Which one fits a MK3 gti? Cheers

A big flat blade screwdriver.... Or ... Or... The pinned wrench from an angle grinder.....

After losing part of my tool, I have been using a combination of G-Clamp (some makes go back in a lot quicker if you can apply some pressure at the same time) and mole-grips/water pump pliers. Obviously be careful not to mangle the piston and/or rubber seal.
