Title: Same old Mk3 issues?
Post by: stow1985 on 08 February 2013, 22:51
For those that don't know, I have '95 8v gti...used and abused.

Everyone seems to be suffering with the same old running issues. thought I'd share my experinces with others...bare with me.

aside from the usual, plugs, leads, coil, relays, bla bla bla I have done two things differently that personaly haven't read anywhere.

1 - if your rocker cover gasket is shot like mine, there is a chance that the sensor (positioned at the back of the engine, pulleys at the front, under the earth strap from the coil) is covered in oil. pull back the rubber boot and check, if its oily clean it and refit the boot and consider changing gasket to prevent further problems.

2 - on the back of the inlet manifold (pulleys being front of the engine) there is a vacum hose with two small green caps on, when these get old they crack...worth checking them too.

I know its vague but hope it helps...these are old girls sometimes its an easy fix

Hi, my mk3 Gti 8v (ady) has a miss/splutter if i just plant my foot down, if i gradually build up the power it goes ok but soon as i accelerate hard it holds back and hardly moves, i've read a LOT of threads and the breather pipe you mention (from inlet mani to servo) popped up in another post(one that i cant find now):
Anyway i checked all the hose and where it joins the servo there is a crack about 7mm long and 2mm wide. would that cause the car to behave like it is? and also does that hose just push in/pull out of the servo? its awkward to get to as the brake fluid res takes up all the space!
ps my brakes work fine!
any help would be muchly appreciated!

Good old air leak ,that will cause your symptons,  it just pulls out of the servo.

Thanks, good to hear! will get that sorted asap, also the air flow meter i unplugged it and it run better so i changed that 1st, bought a replacement that was told it was working fine etc and it still runs the same as with my other one on. hopefully the vac pipe will sort it,if not i've probably got two duff air flow meters :S
PS: thank god they pull out,for a minute i thought it was a servo out job!

i would appreciate it if you guys could put up pics as I am quite "mentally challenged" with my ability to visualize what you guys are talking about...:)

Sorry i was talking about the vacuum hose from the brake servo to the throttle body, since then i gave the air flow meter a good clean and performance has improved a little no stuttering but still a bit slugish.
Anyway i'm pretty sure i need a new or fully working air flow meter and i got sold a duffer.
