The new Golf R Cabriolet – the first-ever open-top R model and the fastest-ever production open-top Golf – will open for ordering this spring, priced at £38,770 RRP OTR
VW0194-13
The new range-topping cabriolet is powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine, which propels the car from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.4 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
The 265 PS engine is connected to a standard six-speed DSG gearbox transmitting power to the front wheels.
Design cues
The Golf R Cabriolet features a bespoke front bumper with gloss-black grille and ‘R’ logo, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights with black housings, gloss-black door mirror casings and black-painted brake calipers with R logo.
The look is finished with side sill extensions, a gloss black rear diffuser framed by chrome-tipped exhausts either side and smoked LED tail lights. Wheels are 18- or 19-inch ‘Talladega’ alloy wheels in either ‘Sterling Silver’ or optionally ‘High-gloss Black’. The bespoke suspension lowers the ride by 25 mm (compared to standard Golf Cabriolet).
Interior design
Inside, the cabriolet has four individual sports seats in ‘Vienna Cool Leather’, with ‘R’ logos in the head restraints.
The leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, handbrake grip and gear lever all have contrasting grey stitching. Pedals feature brushed aluminium caps, and the doors and dashboard have ‘Silver Lane’ aluminium decorative inlays.
Specification
Standard specification includes RCD 310 DAB radio with MDI (multi-device interface) and Bluetooth telephone connectivity. The fully electric insulated hood, operated by a switch in the centre console, can be lowered in 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 18 mph (and raised in 11.0 seconds).
Timings
The Golf R Cabriolet currently has a planned open for order date of 5 March, with first deliveries expected in early May to coincide with the Retailer Cabriolet event.

Love the concept, and VW for actually doing it.....but cant see many hairdressers going for it at that price.
Spare cabrio shells and many many engines left over...?? Anyone would think there is a brand new Golf coming...
-
This makes the Golf R look cheap!
-
Looks good, not sure why it has GTI style tailpipes instead of the centre R ones? May as well save a few grand and buy the GTI version. :lipsrsealed:
-
Looks good that but shud also have the R tailpipes...
-
There's a bit missing........the roof
Looks ok, but just not a fan of golf cabriolets. Would much rather a normal R, at least you get four wheel drive and for less money.
-
Hairdresser springs to mind....
-
it reminds me of the mini coupe!
not a fan!
-
Ouch not sure I would want to spend nearly 40K on a Golf Cab with no 4WD and slower.
-
Looks ok shame bout exhaust tho cab not for me tho
-
I prefer them pipes to the 'R' pipes to be honest. Personal opinion, but I prefer the ED35 over the R. The GTI just seems better thought out, the design is more subtle but just as striking.
The problem is the price  and lack of AWD
-
I think the bird driving it says it all........ ::)

-
Cabrio R, sorry not for me!
-
Cabriolet versions of normal cars have never floated my boat, and who in their right mind would pay nearly £40k for a Golf of any derivative....crazy.
-
totally pointless car
roof chopped off and 100kg+ stiffening beams added and roof mechanism added so slower and handles worse and is noisier and you look like a knob.
its meant to be a performance car and they have gone to extremes to make it perform and look worse. whoever pays near £40k for this wants to give their head a shake
-
I agree with all the comments made this car is ridiculous, 8k more than the GTI cabrio  If you wanted a faster Golf Cabrio (but why would you) then get the GTI and map it.
-
That is going to be one heavy car........
-
It's not looking promising is it Lee?
-
I would be looking at Porsche Boxsters for that kind of money and getting a proper sports car
-

This ^ about sums up the entire point of this marketing exercise.

Wonder what they are saying to each other at the end?
Bloke: while gesturing turning the wheel "What's it like drive luv?"
Bird: while shaking her head "Bag o heavy sh!te but I like colour"

38 Grand is a steep price.

38 Grand is a steep price.
Now that is what you would call an understatement!
-
WTF? How many do they think they will sell of these? If I was a hairdresser and had £37k to spend on a soft top I think the Boxter would be where I was spending my cash.
VW Get a grip ffs.

I always thought the GTi Cabrio took the p*** at £30k but this is an altogether different level of La La Land that VW have moved into. No car ever at £40k should wear a VW badge!!
I very quickly found, for example, on Auto Trader the following :-
BMW 335 cabriolet with all the trimmings - 11 plate with 6k miles for £36k
Many Aston Martins of various types for £35 to £40k, albeit 5 or 6 years old.
An E Class Mercedes E63 AMG on a 59 plate for £39k
And, if you must have one, an Audi TTRs Roadster Quattro with 340hp for £40k - effectively brand new with 500 miles on.
Clearly, I could go on.
I predict annual sales of this R cab of precisely none!!
-
I wonder how many demo cars will be available? :lipsrsealed:

Seen a couple of new Boxsters about now and they are bloody good looking imo!
-
Agreed, and they have a stunning chassis, great bit of kit
-
Once there is a fat hairdresser in there with her m8 and bag full of hairspray be as heavy as a lorry not forgetting the glove full of spice girls boy zone and Peter Andre CDs
-
all i want to know is whats the rear diffuser look like in the flesh and will it fit a hatchback
