Title: New tyres required
Post by: sve170 on 06 February 2013, 13:31
Hi all,
Just had first service on the Edition 35 and only thing required is both front tyres are front NS 3mm and front OS 4mm, still a few more miles left in them but need to start checking out the market.
Bit shocked as the car has only 9300 miles on clock, regardless of mileage though i need some advice on a set of front tyres, have got factory fitted Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 235/35/VR19 on at the moment and to be perfectly honest were ok in the dry but wet performance for me was not so good, the car does not get hammered either its our everyday family motor doing mainly town and dual carriageway journeys.

Any info on alternatives much appreciated or do I stick with the originals.

Cheers

Mike

Dry = Goodyear asymmetric 2

Wet = Take your pick, Vredestein, Michelin, Continental...

These are the most common tyres used here...

My next tyres will be a set of Goodyear asymmetric 2's based on advice I received from guys on here.

My first ED35 had done 13,000 miles when I traded it in and had 4-5 mm of tread and these were running 19' Pirelli PZero's. I was very pleased with these wet or dry and wear was not too bad either. Had the tyres swapped front to rear at 1st service 9.5k miles.

My current ED35 running 19' Continentals are just as good so again pleased with them. Prior to this my MK6 GTI was running Dunlop Sport maxx 18's traded the car with 25k miles and still had 2-3 mm left. However performance of the tyres were not as good as Pirelli or Continental. Also had Michelin Pilots on my ED30 which were very good (better than Dunlop too) and had 25k miles on before needing to be replaced.

Thanks for all the advice, to be honest tyres are a minefield and i cannot believe at 9000mls I am down to 3mm, my previous MKv R32 had michelins on it and they were terrific seemed to last forever.

But still got a few miles left so need to some research on which ones to buy, only problem is wet performance is not so good at the moment.

Thanks again

Mike

Michelin pilot sport 3s worth every penny, 17000 on the front.

You must drive your car really hard, or spend too much time at Maccy D's doing burnouts

If you are going to change the brand of your tyres, I'd swap the fronts with the backs, then change all 4 at together when they have all worn down.

I know it's a bigger outlay to buy 4 at a time, but you won't need to do it for another 7-8,000 miles or so. I don't like having odd tyres on a car.

What????

I put my Mk6 GTI Dunlops on the Ex's 140 TDI and the fronts were on the wear bands at 7000 miles and the rears over half worn.
I was appalled at how badly they wore - on a bog standard Mk5 TDI.

My Goodyears are not half worn, despite nearly 3 years of summer use and 11500 miles on a modified Mk6 GTI.

ees three, having thought about that statement I checked my bills and I did have to buy a pair of tyres for the front when the car had done about 20k forgot about that but the rears did still have 2-3mm left when it was traded.  :embarrassed:

Goodyear Assy' 2's.

Loved them on my Leon FR compared to the Bridgestone's that were on. They gave better grip than the Dunlops on my ED35 now as well.

Will put them on the ED when they're due for changing.

I got 27,000 miles (dead) out of the front Bridgestones RE050A on my GTD and 36,000 out of the rear but they still had some left the noise just got to me.

I get 18k out a set of fronts on my Leon of he RE050As and the rears I changed at 38k with 4.5mm because of the sawtooth wear pattern making them noisy.

Definitely going for GYA2's on the Golf, just need to wear out the originals bit quicker...some dry roads and they won't last long

23k on the original bridgestones RE050A and still at 4mm on the front. Hate them though. The noisiest tyre I have ever had and not that grippy in the wet. Always liked Michelins and on last car without traction control they were the best in damp conditions out of several different makes tried including Pirellis. Will go for Michelins when the time comes.
