Someone summed it up well yesterday, but I can't remember what they said.

I don't see what the problem is. Gay couples can have civil ceremonies so why not officially be allowed to marry.
-
This sums it up perfectly for me...
Nick Herbert, Conservative
"If marriage hadn't been re-defined in 1836, there wouldn't be any civil marriages; if it hadn't been re-defined in 1949, under 16-year-olds would still be able to get married; if it hadn't been re-defined in 1969, we wouldn't have today's divorce laws - and all of these changes were opposed. I know that the signal we send today about whether the law fully recognises the place of gay people in our society will really matter. Above all, I think of two people, faithful and loving, who simply want their commitment to be recognised, as it is for straight couples, and that in the end is what this bill is about."
-
Frankly I'm extremely disappointed.
I haven't had a single proposal yet.
-
to be fair, who gives a sh1t
N.B apart from the gay population and the Bible bashers
-
So will they be allowed to marry in Church?
-
It won't effect me at all being straight. If Gay/Lesbians want to get married then they should be allowed to just like we (straight) people are allowed.
It's down to the church if they can get married in church at the end of the day
-
The church has a choice, it just means that marriage has the same meaning and legal standing for gay and heterosexual people. Instead of one for one and one for another.
If a church wants to marry a gay couple they can, if they don't they dobn't, simples!
-
I don't see any good reason to not allow Gay marriage.
The more annoying thing is MP's were apprently given a free vote, now personally i think they should a free vote on everything because if they normally only vote what they are told then why do we bother paying them as any member of the public could do that for a lot less money
-
The thing that the people against gay marriage within the churches aren't telling people is that the only 'religious' part of a marriage is a blessing at the end. The rest of it, as with in a registry office, is a formality of marriage from a legal standing. Don't agree on religious grounds? Don't bless it!
-
I don't see why it needed to waste so much time / resource to get this approved. We're not living in the medieval times and haven't for while now... Let the gays marry gays, it's not harming anyone, maybe the religious zealots who can't get their head around the fact some people like the bum bum and others like scissoring.

There are religious gay folk, who will want a church wedding / blessing - good luck finding one that will ! You'll then get the religious gays kicking up a fuss about the few or no churches willing to participate and causing more grief / backlash / pubic outcry. It'll never stop as long as the gays wants to make a fuss about their sexual habits and the church won't admit to being a bunch of gays.

Eat da poo poo!
-
I have no issues with this at all.
What I am so surprised at is that there are so many total nutbars who are against it. They are the odd ones, not the gay couples who want to confirm their love for one another.

Too true!

I think they should be allowed, for one simple reason... So they know how miserable marriage really is!

No youre confusing Gay with Nonce
-
I'm all for it, why the hell not?!
Nearly got into an argument with my mother about it - she's a catholic and thinks marriage should be for making babies. I said well what about heterosexuals who can't or don't want children, I suppose they shouldn't be allowed to get married either :undecided:
-
not sure why everything has to have a label these days...
are people really going to love each other more if they have some paper to prove it??

the only reason MP's are p*ssy-footing around the subject is voter statistics.
(the following figures are all speculative)
lets say 33% of voters are religious and against gay marriage by default.
22.3% are non religious and AGAINST gay marriage
22.3% are non religious and FOR gay marriage
22.3% are non religious and DON'T CARE either way.
that's an average of approximately 50% in either direction, so whatever they (MP's) do, they're between a rock and a hard place. so it will be discussed until discussion is exhausted and then it will be someone else's turn to decide.
civil union's are better than marriage anyway, all the same rights but no divorce action. best of both worlds. and a civil union can be as extravagant as you want, and exactly like a church wedding, just without the churches blessing. and why should the church bless a marriage that goes against its doctrine?
no disrespect, but you can't be gay and a christian.
I am in no way 'anti-gay'. i am however anti pointless-waste-of-tax-payers-money. gay marriage needs no discussion, it's a decision for the church, not the government. i see it simply as another bunch of mooshtacs with a bee in their bonnet and too much time on there hands.
don't get me started on the page 3 poll or the public inquiry into the Mark Duggan shooting.
