Hi I have owned my MK4 GTi 1.8T since last year and I keep hearing that the AGU engine is the best one to have but how do I know if mine is AGU?? Cheers!

What year is it? The sticker under the carpet in the boot will have your engine code on it.
The AGU block is supposed to be the better block, but AUM/AUQ are fitted with the better KO3s turbo
Take a look here for more info:

It will also be stamped on the block it self :)

Cheers guys - Just been and looked at the sticker under the boot carpet and it says AGU. The car is a 1999 T reg GTi 1.8T,
Thanks
Steve.

AGU definitely then. Do you have a cable throttle? that pulls on the cam on the throttle body? if so, it's an AGU.
Head and pistons are better than AUM / AUQ, but it has a small ko3 turbo instead of ko3S, and the management is much more simple and can't have all the cool new features that the later cars can.
Still a fantastic engine though, mine's an AGU :)

Yes pretty sure when I have looked under the bonnet on the odd occasion there is a cable throttle on show, thanks again. Mine has done 154700 miles.
