Title: May have to break golf :/
Post by: emery1990 on 03 February 2013, 14:04: After this time it may just have come to having to just break the golf for spares :cry: After looking at it, rust in quite a few places of which an inner sill, a large hole in the floor, a hole in the rear quarter and a hole on the boot sill amongst other places! The first thing my mechanic said was it isnt a very nice one, although looking very nice on the outside!

I think I have put about £1500 into the car and cant afford to put any more into to get it up too scratch. After all you buy on body work and I can see it needing another 1k into it.

Is it best to just scrap it after I have removed parts? I would give the shell away after finishing, if someone thinks they can recover it ( you need welding skills!)

I can see myself getting around 1k in parts from it over time. I couldnt see anyone offering me 1k for it as whole!

I'm so gutted :sad:

doubt you would get anyone too interested if you were honest about the rust apart from people out to make a buck from breaking your pride and joy for ya .

so you plan seems best. strip it, maybe look for another shell - even a non gti and swap everything over :smiley:

No way will I give it too someone cheap as theres quite a bit of value on it, refurbed bbs, stainless exhaust , leather interior etc :cry:

If the body is as bad as you say - IMO The only way to get your money back is to break it for spares...

The shell when stripped should get you 50-75 notes but this depends on your scrap man...

Some parts will fly out other can take ages to sell - depends on how much time and effort you put into selling the parts..

Yeah the main parts should, engine , megasquirt, wheels etc.

I would have patched it up sold it on to someone who could do something with it rather than see it broken up. Whats the odds when you get another one you wont strip the old one for parts aswell?
This is the issues with the golf these days its a classic and lots of younger crowd want one but actually its a not a cheap car to run for the same money a more mordern reliable car could be had with less money!
So what happens when we fix these up to a point and its gets sold or senario Ghazal'ed by a pack of Hyenas!

Sounds good at the time, but its choices at the end of the day mate.
So the only problem is the rust on the floor plan right or is the other body parts done in?
Like everyone said mate if you do get another it would be good as spares and do it right this time around if money lets you or do what I do fix bits every six months so I'm not at mercy of cash?

I reckon another grand and it's be great. Just needs either abd fuelling ecu etc or just the ms mapped. I drove it the other day down my road , scary as its s hill and doing brakes myself !

Post by: raferackstraw on 04 February 2013, 16:40: if your estimating 1k for body work ill guarantee that will rocket once its started, welding alone sounds above 1k i was quoted 750 for sills, rear arches and spare wheel well, that more than doubled once they found inner sills and floor rotten as well as inner arches and axle mount :shocked:
best to bite the bullet and break it, gutted for you i made same mistake but fortunately had saved enough cash to sort it

to me this rust from these phots looks a touch like a mole hill, personally if it was mine i'd be cutting in new panels and welding them up, especially for an oak green 16v!! :wink:

Buy a new rear repair panel and find a one man band welder he may well do a cash in hand job don't go to a big body shop they add vat overheads all that malarkey. What I'm sayin is rather than loose a load of money and your car spend a little more than you already have and keep the 16 valve

In all the 3 parts comes to £200 then welding then the spraying, but that's just the rear. Just hope the inner seal hasn't gone! The starter motor connector snapped off the other day :rolleyes:

I did this a few years ago with a 88 GTI I bought for £250.00 and after I had it sorted and made saleable - I caught a serious cold & HAD to break it in the end, as it was the only way I could get my money back....

Have a "serious" think about it before getting deeper into the money pit you have already...

No one wants to break a MK2 but if it's got a shot shell you have to seriously consider it and look at it as keeping other 20+ year old cars running...

You can do a lot to stop the rot from spreading yourself TBF at the end of the day the welder has clean metal to weld with, as he was going to cut out bad bits anyway. But at least you will stop the rot from spreading any further!
I've done it with my arches and boot even did some small filler work.
