Title: Ed35 more problems
Post by: Ed35 chunk on 02 February 2013, 23:23
 was out in the ed35 today after being stored away last few weeks due to weather when a strange noise started at traffic lights I pulled straight over and on inspection noticed the cambelt hanging off and a cog hanging out on a angle! Quick call to vw assistance and car is now on driveway, maybe new engine our rebuild? I ave a feeling the next week is going to be fun

The car runs so unlikely cam belt do you meen alternater belt?
Could be the clutch flywheel on the aircon?

If it is the cam belt and it is the bottom cog coming out then that is the cog that fits to the crankshaft!!!!!!!!

I'd expect that if this has moved then you'd be looking at a new engine under warranty as the cylinders will most likely have impacted with the valves and possibly have even broken rockers.

If it is the alternator belt I doubt if the engine would run noisy! And it only has pulleys, not cogs.

Looks like the tensioner is hanging out on a angle, when rac guy started it up sounded bad, not what u expect on a 10 month old car with 4k

On closer inspection now in the light it's a bronze small ish cog hanging out midway dwn the driver side no where near bottom must not be crankshaft

Post by: Hurdy on 03 February 2013, 14:05
It would be a rare occurrence for the bottom cog to be out, however the tensioner being loose still isn't good as the timing belt can jump teeth which can be just as bad. My advice would be not to drive it and have it transported to the VW garage and ask for a full report.

  That's not good, feel for ya mate
Hope it gets sorted with minimal fuss and hope its not the timing belt that's slipped

I have a feeling the coming weeks are going to be interesting, if car needs rebuild our new engine I'm not going to be happy, surely if your car needs to major components in first year I can have money back our new car

Don't hold your hopes in getting a new car or money back....getting it fixed is probably the best you will get out of them...

Takes the p how a brand new car needs new gearbox due to a manufacture fault and poss a new engine aswell, they tried getting away with it blaming remap but on inspection found a part to be at fault. Hopefully straight forward warranty claim as I have a letter from vw saying my warranty is not affected by my remap as they can not prove it causes damage and also 250 quid compensation for my hassle

Lucky result as most dealers just tell you to go away when its remapped...they blame the extra strain on the components, unless its by certain tuners who deal with the dealers...didnt APR deal with VWUK at one point?

Either way...good luck

Getting a gearbox issue sorted after a remap is one thing.  Getting a possible engine rebuild will be quite another !
Anyway, good luck

Looks like the cambelt our pully has failed how could a remap cause this, car has been stock since gearbox issue so going to be a worrying week
Title: Re: Ed35 more problems
Post by: Hurdy on 03 February 2013, 23:30
??

If the cam belt has failed it would have broken completely. I've seen cam belts hanging on by threads and the engine hasn't gone??

It shouldn't affect this to be honest, but a remap is an excuse if the dealers want to try use it...extra stresses on all components etc.

Hope you get it sorted

It's not the dealers that have a problem with tuned cars it's vw, if they say there not going authorise it to be done under warranty then dealer won't fix it. However vw has to prove that the damage was caused by the mods and not a faulty part

i'm assuming you do drive it with a modicum of mechanical sympathy given this is an engine your never here that many horror stories over

mines cracked 9k today, Stage 1 went on at 1k and Stage 2 at 2k and had zero mechanical issues, i'm on some aggressive settings and no clutch issues either, the only gripe is the door seals, admittedly i dont drive the door handles off it all the time

i'm always upfront with dealers about cars being modified and if they were uneasy i never use them, my dealer who supplied the car is mod friendly and has a keen interest in the car

when talking to the service manager last week he did say life would be easier if the car appeared with a stock engine file but they were not worried about the mechanical modifications, so today i popped into Revo who have flashed the stock file for a couple of weeks given VW's recent antics

my view is paying someone for the time to take the map off before you venture to VW with suspected gremlins is money well spent

Mines just hit 4k was mapped at 1k car is really looked after being serviced every 2k which is twice a year, always warmed up before being driven swiftly and cooled down after, I think I should of got a faster car in first place really and save all the hassle of running a modified car :embarrassed:

Are your door seals creaking or is it wind noise? If they're creaking then it'll be the felt seal along the top, put some half decent wax on the body where they meet and it'll solve it, don't put that gummi pflege stuff on the rubbers! It's rubbish and makes it worse!

its the wind noise issue which is only on the drivers side

Why have you had it flashed with a stock file? Do you have issues?  Do you not have the SPS unit, to take it to stock?
Title: Re: Ed35 more problems
Post by: wigit on 04 February 2013, 21:51
there are no issues with the car Oli, i just wanted VW stock on it for its first service so it did not draw attention to itself before the intake and new file go on :)

Does the SPS not take it to stock then? I thought it did?

the revo stock file, they have flashed the oem VW file on so no code on the ecu, overkill probably

SPS doesn't put it back to stock it just turns the boost, timing and fueling settings right down to give you Revo's version of "stock", but will still be at about 250bhp, as I understand it.  I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
