I've been imming and ahhing for a while now about fitting LED rears to my GT. I'm not so sure it's the right thing to do, as I don't want it to look like a half arsed GTI wannabe.
Today my mind has been made up tho'. The LED mirror indicator on my 2004 Passat has packed up, so I'm going to have to replace it. £24.00!!! If it had a bulb in it, it would cost pence, but it doesn't so I have to buy the complete lamp.
Now as my red Golf will be with me for the long term, and it has LED lamps, how ever much are they going to cost when they conk out? Because no doubt at some point in time, they will.
-
I thought that the whole point of LED lights is their low energy usage and longevity.
The LEDs we have in the house have a 25 year life expectancy.
Worst case scenario would be the requirement to replace one of the 4 units which is around £120ish from VW.
Definitely worth the risk as they have transformed the rear of our car, with so many commenting on how nice they look, by far my best mod without any negatives IMO.

Once one goes, the others won't be far behind. I've just had to replace a xenon ballast on the Passat as well. That was £252. Talking to other B5.5 Passat owners, lots of them are getting failing ballasts when they get to between 8 and 10 years old. One lad has had both sides go within a month of each other.
I'm sure these things have a built in obsolescence.
-
I'm a glass half full type of chap so not even a consideration for me, if one breaks it will get replaced...simples
-
I'm with Raffe here - optimistic and also agreeing that they transform the look of the car. A great mod and I'm sure they'll last a good many years.
-
I was a sceptic too, now its transformed the rear of my GTD. I dont regret it. It looks too good.
-
LED lights are like a nice ornament. Expensive for what they are but nice to have.
You could never really justify them in pure money terms (just like buying a Golf really) but they draw lots of compliments and they're standard on Cabrios so you can't be accused of being a GTI/D/R wannabe!!
I get comments on them all the time. Mr Mrs says they're pointless as you can't se them when they're on when you're sat in the car, and I tell her to wind her neck in as she has no idea what she's talking about!!
So what are you waiting for?

My justification is that I can take them off and sell them on when it comes to selling the car....weak but it was strong enough man maths to get the capex signed off by her indoors

Sounds familiar. :lipsrsealed:

The money side of things is down to me. I pay every single bill in our house, so what's left is mine.
I understand why people fit them, but how many of you are going to still have your cars in 10 years time?
The other issue is whilst it's acceptable to fit them to an early GTI/D. Could fitting them to a GT be seen as being a bit XR3i with an RS Turbo body kit?

I think they are subtle enough to not be in that territory.
A bit like a nice set of alloys. Will always look good.
Go for it
PS I hope you give wifey some pocket money
-
Like I said, it won't make it a GTI wannabe as they're fitted to the Cabrio as standard and they have some pretty limp wristed engine options.
Whichever way you do the maths it will at least make the car look more modern and less like a Toyota. I hate the standard mk6 lights with a passion!!

No we will have our car 3-4 years tops.
It's only people on car forums like this who would actually know you have fitted lights from a higher spec model, general friends and family will just comment that the lights look good...in my experience anyhow.

I think they look great and would enhance your car but certainly not in a GTI/GTD wannabe type of way.
Like someone has pointed out, it will only be the folk on forums / in the know that will notice something is different but who cares? as long as you like them.
Now if you were putting a GTI/GTD badge on that would be different.
Although I really liked this from a GT owner

I quite like the subtlety of that grille and badge. However, I think the little items like that should be the finishing touches to a bigger project.
If I was to go down the route of a Blue Motion body kit (which I have been thinking about for some time) then lights and grilles would be a denifnate. However, that would be spending a lot of money on what is essentially just a diesel Golf, when it could be going towards a replacement for my Passat.
Hmmmmmm.
-
I think the Cherry LED's would look lovely and understated against your red paint, you could always get a set and see how you feel with them on the car, i'm sure someone would give you what you paid for them if you change your mind?
-
Where did you get your rear LEDS from please?
-
I bought mine 2nd hand from EyeBallPaul when he sold up.
-
Mine will be for sale around august time.
-
How much do they cost please? And is it just plug and play or do you need Vagcom to get them working?

I bought mine for the dealer, with a discount, and they cost £460, you also need wiring adapters (readily available on ebay) and you do need to code them otherwise you get 'bulb out' warnings every time you turn on the ignition.
The coding varies depending on the year of your car, some use 04, but that caused problems with mine, used 15 and all was fine.

Cheers for the info! I will have a word with the dealers on Friday when I pick the car up and see if they will do me a deal!

Got mine from here...

as oem parts and including the wiring harness, worked out at £384 delivered which was reasonable.
As per Mustard's comment '04' gave me problems on Byte 18 and had to change it to a value of '15' which worked perfectly.
Best cosmetic md you can make as many will agree
-
I agree with raffe my first mark 6 gti had normal tail lights which I thought were ok but my new one has led's and they look so much better
-
After talking to Dana at rossntech it seems 15 is the correct value for rhd cars. As I tried a few values before contacting them for technical support.
-
Did we ever establish what the value should be if you are putting your standard lights back on?
-
Need to get a set of these  got mates who work for TPS and a motor factor will seen how much I can get them for. Am I right in saying they are made by hella ?
-

Get the reg number of a car that had them from new and the dealers or TPS will give you the numbers. In fact, use this one. W3 HDY

Any idea how much they cost from a dealers normally?
-
Dealer quoted me £470 but I know someone who works for TPS hopefully will be able to do a much better price than VW

Looks like I will be buying a set from these after all! Do they come complete with the top trim etc?
-
Sure do, takes all of 15 mins to fit.
Just remember they will need coding.
-
One more thing (like Columbo ) on the car sytems website it says cars before 2010 new BCM required. What is this exactly and is there a way of finding out if I need one? My car is a 59 plate, registered 09/2009.
Thanks again
