Post by: dragongreengolfgti on 02 February 2013, 00:36
well i love my mk3 16v i have spent every possible hour i can that's dry to keep it good i never though i'd contemplate selling it but.....

I have fallen in love with mk2's i have been saving for a mitsubishi evo 6/7 since i was 20 and have 6k saved for it but i am in love with golfs  i can buy either tomo  if i sold my car i want 1400 for mine with audi tt comps or 975 with standard longbeaches its a 16v abf with fsh up untill 2011 when i had it self service after although i can get it serviced at my local non vw garage!

Its in good condition throughout with custom leather interior and produces a healthy 161bhp  this is not a forsale add as i want to keep it aswell all i'm asking is there any decent concourse mk2 golfs in either white or oak green left !

Not being a traiter or anything but evo all day long for pure power and madness

Yes, the Evo has the power but lacks the madness

Still heavily involved in the Jap scene so can speak from experience here. The Evo has bags of power but so many computers you can't do anything with it. Seriously boring to drive, you can throw them into corners without any drama at all. I heard an expression at Japshow last year from one of the members of the Evo Owners Club say "A blind chimpanzee can drive one of these quickly". Kinda says it all to me

Still got my Jap bruiser as a weekend toy (and no it isn't an Evo) and the MKIV as a daily drive....

My advice? Take one out and test it. Be prepared to find that your childhood hero has faults - you may love it.

Personally, I would stick with what you KNOW you love

Just as a by the by - I have friends that run Evo's and a couple of points that need to be mentioned.

1. Active YAW control - 90% of these DO NOT WORK. Very fragile part that is prone to malfunction and expensive to repair
2. Fuel Economy - My MR2 will happily do 15MPG under heavy load, around 30MPG with sensible drive (off boost). The Evo will struggle to do 20MPG under most driving conditions
3. Servicing - Due to the nature of the engine and the tuning conditions on the engine and management system, these cars need to be serviced every 6000 miles. This isn't a job that can be done at home either as many of the service items require specialist tools and equipment only found at Mitsubishi dealers.

In comparison, the Impreza (very similar car to drive and very comparable to the Evo) is far more robust. The boxer 4 lump is better made and far more reliable, tuning capabilities are pretty much identical. Servicing can be done at home and there is more "give" in the driving experience.

Only happy to give forward my experience in this scene - been involved in the Jap tuning scene for over 8 years now and know only too well how easy it is to look at these cars through rose tinted glasses (I have been there and done that - bought a Supra as I had always wanted one and was seriously disappointed with it)

Evo will not be cheap on maintenance, my next door neighbour had one about a year ago, the clutch and flywheel went on it and firstly no garage wanted to take the job one and one garage quoted him £1500 labour.

He sold it then at a loss.

Otherwise a great car

One of the reasons my wife bought an Impreza over an Evo...tbh the Impreza has not let us down in anyway...want a steady drive through traffic..no problem, open road...hit the load peddle and smile. very well built cars, can't fault it in any shape or form...if you can keep the mk3 as a daily and a have a Imprezza as your toy...happy days mate

only thing depending on where you live is INSURANCE

I know they are quite juicy at the best of times my brother in law has a evo8 fq300 which he's had for 5 years now (not as a daily though) I know people in the trade luckily and 2 mechanics at my local Mitsubishi garage which is opposite my work so if i was to get one it would be looked after no end  i am debating a scoob purely for the sound side of things  however to me they are just not quite as good as an evo

Cant u keep ur Mk3?

Yes i can i am planning to keep it for the daily but i don't mind selling it now tbh it will only stay though if i can get a dual insurance for under £600-£700 a year currently it costs me £313 fully comp for the golf which i paid in full so for this year it probably wouldn't matter. However i would then need to open a separate policy for the new toy with 0 no claims meaning it gets expensive so would rather combine the two or just have the one car. This is something else i will have to decide when i come to buy in the spring

I would rather an evo if i'm honest however would consider a 04 plate style scoob aswell looking at other cars also in the same league so not sure just yet what  i have 2 months nearly to decide and 6k to spend maybe stretch to 7k

if i were you i wouldnt even entertain the idea of buying an evo, it will get stolen

have have look on the owners club, theres a section in there about evos stolen, last time i looked there were about 70 members who have had their cars stolen and then you read how it got stolen and you see things like badly beaten parents for keys etc etc

i have 2 mates who have owned them, one got stolen and the other one was attempted but didnt get taken but he sold it soon after that

I know about them being stolen my sister and her husband got broken into and had the keys stolen for his evo and her mk5 golf however they got disturbed and never took them  They made about 2k's worth of damage that includes all locks and new keys for both cars and house plus now they have installed a cctv system and a good house alarm connected to the garage. Two weeks after the initial break in the came back and tried getting into the garage which set the house alarm off in doing so so my brother in law was on there case straight away! they we're video'd the whole time in doing what they done and we're put on all the surrounding police aware sites  (will try find the vid) They haven't returned since after failing twice  this was over a year ago now. The people doing this seem to target a place one at a time and it is usually jap cars or vag

If and when i consider one i have already thought of this happening and there will be no way of them stealing my car from we're it will be stored  :nerd:

i had a classic shape impreza a few years ago and it was great for everything.not as much to run as people make out.mine had a 3" decat exhaust etc...the usual bolt on mods and made just over 330bhp.imo a well sorted impreza will be alot more raw to drive and cost less to tune and run.just more bang for your buck.
