Had an old friend who used to be a BMW mechanic over yesterday and we installed a stereo and flushed the coolant.
Together we narrowed down the burning smell to the exhaust directly under the drivers door/seat. He reckons it will be something burning on the hot exhaust but all we can see is some oil staining. I do lose some oil, so could there be a leak in this area? What would oil be doing faffing about that far back?
Thanks again guys, one day I might be able to help you!

intercooler pipe, very common
behind drivers wheel, follow the pancake pipe back

Presumably the smell is crankcase oil vapours? Or oil leaking from the intercooler pipe and burning off?
What should i look out for on the pipes and what should i do?
Could this explain the 17705 drop in pressure between turbo and throttle body?

It'll be the oil burning on something, probably the exhaust

Oil, boost leaks leak oil, clean it off and then see if any of the pipes have popped off/jubilee clips loose

Yes

I've looked at the pipe, everything is fine.
However there is a fair amount of oil further up in the bowels of the engine. With the front right wheel at full lock I can see what appears to be the back of the block. It has oil on it and obviously a lot of road grime too. What on EARTH could be leaking down there?

could be anything, clear the grime away and then see if it re appears, a cleaner engine is easier to spot leaks on

and check your fuse box as well while your at it, mine started melting after changing electrics etc
