hello,
my handbrake light and abs light had been on since i brought the car. few months ago the bulb in the abs light blew.
finally got round to changing my drivers side rear abs sensor. i had tested it with the multimeter a while ago so knew it was that one. cleaned the abs rings up on both sides as they were covered in crap. went for a quick drive and handbrake light was off for a minute to start with but came back on. tried a quick skid to see if abs kicked in and it didnt.
is it possible that the abs bulb needs to be functioning so the handbrake light can go out? and for the abs to work again?

ABS ECU is most likely broken, but first check the fluid level and the handbrake switch to make sure, get the car scanned for fault codes
-
yeah fluid levels and switch have been checked.
does the bulb have anything to do with it??
and yeah guna try and scan it after dinner
-
The bulb has nothing to do with abs fault .
-
just scanned it and its showing both front sensors the rear right sensor (just changed) and also the abs pump
is there still chance its the abs ecu?? or would it show on the scan if its the ecu??
-
With that report of faults then I would put money on it, ive been there with mine !
-
okay mate
thaaaaanks!!!
-
Pay someone to fit and bleed the ABS pump if you need one as it can be a sh!t to do, the rest is easy although it can get expensive if its all fragged
I've had to change the lot too
-
where exactly is the abs ecu?? ive searched google and here but cnt seem to find it. only thing ive found is under rear seats but i know its not there
-
its bolted to the pump and has a big plug going to it.
-
ha, fair enough, thanks for your help mate
-
No probs mate,it has four bolts holding it on think they are t5 and can be removed without breaking into the fluid system, send it off for testing ,tshirt2k off here did mine,pm him he may be able to help

is this post here what needs to be done??
-
im struggling a bit with removing the module. is there a guide on here how to do it or somewhere else??
-
Have you got an E5 socket? They can rust and lose shape. My original was like that and had to remove whole pump assembly to get the ecu off.
-
no i havent got a e5 socket, i hadent even got that far haha. just frightn of braking stuff really.
however i did disconnect the harness left if for a bit and put it back in, scanned it and erased all the error codes for the abs ( 00283 / 00285 / 00287 / 00290 / 01276) then re scanned it.
it all came up with 00285.
can anyone make anything of this?? should i just try replacing the sensor, or should i just try to get the module out and try fix it??
-
I have just bought another mk3 with the same faults,
Ordered a replacement pump and ECU and see how it goes.
-
how much did that all cost and where from??
