Title: How many miles do you get out of a fuel tank for a GTI?
Post by: RAIDEN on 30 January 2013, 10:44
Still cant decide on the GTI or the GTD.  If the GTI isnt much better then my R32 ill prob go diesel.  At the mo I can get 300-330 miles out a full tank on my MK5

GTi - 320-330 per tank average
Leon FR (basically same as GTD) - 520-540 per tank average, it does go everywhere driven like a company car so not bad atall

Looks like the devils fuel it is.  I do a 40 mile round trip to work everyday so in the R32 its not great.  Work pay for half but there sort of hinting a 3.2 V6 is costing them abit

Don't do it
Hows about you get a Git and balance out driving it heavy with a few easy days, you should then get approx 400-450...?!!

Personally I'm getting around 300, so my balance is not right

I want to keep what ive got really but its costing too much to run.  The GTD or the Leon are the only diesels I like at the mo.  Seeing as your a fellow reds fan I had heart failure when I went to Anfield from Hertfordshire.  The R32 cost me £160 in fuel there and back.  Took my wifes van a few weeks later £50 to fill up the tank and still had abit of fuel when we came back.  But ill be taking the train to tonights game.  Come on boys!!!!

I get around 500 miles in the GTD but can be more/less depending on conditions/journeys by + or - 50 miles

Based on £1.40 litre for Diesel and £1.32 for Petrol and 500 miles / 350 miles per tank respectively, the cost per mile is around 15p for diesel and 21p for petrol (just the fuel not any other running costs)

Question: Is the 5p per mile extra for a petrol enging worth it to you or is the 5p per mile saving for going GTD worth losing the petrol engine?

^^Hope that makes sense?

Mine is no better than my last car - a BMW 330 auto

There's a lot more to the maths of this issue that simply fuel costs.

How much is it going to cost you to change the R32 for a GTI? I reckon the amount you'll need to shell out to one will buy a hell of a lot of fuel for the R32. Factor in depreciation on the GTI will be more than the R32 and in 2-3 years time, the GTI will have still cost you more than keeping the R32, even with spending more on fuel.

The only way that you can be guaranteed to save money from day one, is to change the R32 to a more economical car of the same value.

I have thought long term is it worth it? R32 has no money oweing on it but roadtax is £465 a year.  Insurance not too bad but its a 2006 and im thinking in the next couple of years things mite need replacing as its getting older and its not cheap to fix.  Im not going to change until this time next year so ive got plenty of time to think

I roughly get 340-350 if being sensible (this is using posh petrol though) but my first tank was a little under 300 was a tad heavy footed in the beginning, who could resist!!?

Don't see the point in having a gti if you drive it like a granny. Go hard or go home is what I say!

MK6 is good if you don't hammer it. Mine averaged 36-37 mpg over 2.5 years. On a run I have seen 40-42 on trip in France. ED30 and ED35 31-32 mpg but doesn't really get any better on a run so drive them hard. Don't by a diesel it won't make you smile as much as an R32 or GTI.

Mate, I know what you mean. I had a similar experience in my GiT recently during a round trip from the Northants area, but we did hit quite a lot of traffic.
I was in a similar dilemma when I bought my GiT as I initially was due to order an R. However, my Finance-head got the best of me and so went for the GiT. I do often wish I went ahead with the order for an R but overall I am extremely happy with my current baby.
Obviously, its your decision but you must weigh up the pros and cons for you currently and in the near future, for eg I wanted the Mk5 GiT in 2005 but sensibly for a 1.6 Nissank as we were buying a house at the same time. Do whats right for you for now, try not to let your urges get the better of you as, like in my case, you should be in a better position in a few years time !

Around 340 on average, dont see how you can get more unless you drive around 20 mph everywhere!!

By my reckoning, that's only 28mpg. Surely you GTI owners ought to be getting low 30's at least? Mid to high 30's with a lighter right foot.

Why buy a GTi and worry about the mpg.....diesels are for the penny pinchers

With a light right foot and keeping to the speed limits we can get a minimum of high 30's out of the GTi. On a recent 380mile trip not hanging about!! got just under 34. Better consumption than the 1.4 TSI above 50mph.

I get about 300 miles out of a tank. on a motorway i find on a 120mile trip i average about 34mpg but going back and for to work i thinks it closer to 28mpg.

the gti like 50mph as when im going to my mates house about 12miles away it gets close the 40s mpg.

Personally i have given up thinkin about it too much. i find that when i drive a bit more spirited and try to keep momentum i actually get better mpg as have to anticipate junctions and lights more.

We went to stay with friends at the weekend which was a 220 mile round, motorway for 80% of the journey and making good progress we averaged 38mpg on the trip computer in each direction.

Very acceptable mpg for a car with nearly 300bhp

330 miles almost every tank which is roughly 99% dual carriageway driving. Not brilliant but not as bad as my mk5 GTI used to be.
235 section tyres maybe don't help.

I would say about 340 on an avergae tank, thats doing a 20 mile round trip to and from work and 12 miles to and from the gym during the week.  I dont get to drive it anymore than that to be honest.

When I first had it I went down to Dorset and back on one tank which was just shy of 400 miles and I was taking it slow but I agree with buying a nice turbo petrol motor is not the way forward to get good consumption.

Drove down to Brighton to see a mate from Northampton, then drove to Guilford from Brighton and back to Northampton, 380 miles in total and one tank with some back lane blasts in between motorway munching!!

Barely got home as it was saying 0 miles for about 5 miles, still gotta get it to the petrol station tomorrow morning but its only half a mile down the road.

Since my DPF/sensor issue has been sorted, my economy has gone up massively i.e. 100+ miles per tank

I now get 500+ to a tank again, as a "normal" fill up - can be more when doing longer runs but normal for me is lots of relatively short runs and/or peak time driving.

Wow I managed over 300 miles from a tank for the first time ever today! Currently on 305 miles and computer says I have 65 left! I think this may have something to do with the 146 mile round trip to Stratford upon Avon last weekend.

Managed 350 miles by the time my tank was empty! Cost me over £70 to fill her up again. Fuel prices are disgusting at the mo.
