Title: Mk3 Anniversary shed project, VR6 Power now present
Post by: Martinvr6 on 29 January 2013, 20:21
Moving on to my other car, this will predominantly be my daily driver, fun, project car

Now a little history, just before Christmas I spied this on EBay, bad advert poor pics and in London, I'm in Aberdeen, I watched it, stuck in a bid and surprisingly, for less than £500 it was mine. Excellent, merry Christmas to me.

I never viewed the car, took a total risk, paid to have it delivered and first impressions were pretty grim, manky interior, missing indicators/covers, burst steering wheel, missing tailpipes, this was the tip of the iceberg,

Anyways here it is after a hose down just after completing its trip north
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/90412053-1700-4F63-B358-8B1419EBC726-3333-000003B2E91BDE16.jpg)

Feeling a little deflated I then went on to check the jacking points, rear footwell bungs, and the other usual mk3 rot traps, nothing to report, straight rot free sills, rot free footwell bungs, rot free inside the doors, rear sills, floor, delighted was an understatement, time to get some bits together and form a plan

I popped into VW and ordered replacement skirt covers and front splitter, I wasn't holding out much hope with the latter as forum hearsay for years has been they are obsolete, 2 days later my bits had arrived, including the splitter. GET IN.

Going from this damaged OEM Splitter
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/FADAA44F-0F96-4908-9BDD-4D743D4F97BD-1843-000001EF861D04FC.jpg)

To this fresh new one. I fitted indicators and covers I got from my mate
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/5AF3F48E-5EDA-4C41-AE58-D6ED2D08FD94-1843-000001EF6DC6FF76.jpg)
The bags the splitters arrived in (sorry they are upside down)

Moving on from that I decided I would replace the rear carpet, as it was badly worn and grubby, I got a new one from my mate, I also took the opportunity to clean out the rear foot wells whilst the seats were out. I will do the front one later on when I'm doing work at that end of the car

Drivers side rear footwell
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/AB863B6D-A216-4D3C-8782-949350D58963-778-000000CC905F2048.jpg)
Passenger side rear footwell
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/C60BE6BE-5992-47FD-A855-4EF2396FD03F-778-000000CC8A4FCFC5.jpg)

Nice and rust free, which of the 20+ mk3s I have owned this is by far the freshest one.

Whilst the seats were out, I decided it would be rude not to replace them with the black colour concept seats I had in the garage, some may see it as silly removing the anniversary seats, but they were dirty, rather worn and I find them VERY uncomfortable
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/F16AEB2F-F674-4959-B804-2D24E8507E63-778-000000CCA1AAF9FE.jpg)

And how it looks now still unwashed after a new N/Sdoor mirror, front splitter and local dealer plates
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/D84D9588-F581-4BD5-8103-A03CE7712DA5-1843-000001EF74CF4082.jpg)

I have some plans for it that will displease the purists, however bear with me,

I'm getting an MOTd OBD2 VR6 with a stainless exhaust from my mate for £300 so that will be getting transplanted in a few weeks time, with OEM factory airbox
Suspension needs replaced I have asked about coil overs on here that are for sale
Bought black ABC pillar trims, I'm still undecided on doing the roof cloth black
New OEM lower arms, front steering arms, top mounts, wheel bearings, ABS sensors etc when the engine is transplanted
Mk3.5 Cab wheel again asked about one on here
Highline centre console
Climatronic retrofit
Colour coded door ibiza handles and rear spoiler, and bumpers repainted
Fit side skirt covers
Replace front carpet
Replace sunroof with one from donor car
Refurb wheels with anthracite centres, silver lips and 6r Polo centre caps with Audi nut covers
Fit hi tech moulded mudflaps (smaller and less obstructive than OEM Votex)
Remove non functioning rear wiper
Highline rear badge
Replace GTI badges front and rear

Off the top of my head that's about it, I'm hoping to have the suspension and engine work done in the next few weeks when I return to the UK

Thanks guys.

I dislike the standard seats on any mk3, if its a long term car then it must have Recaros, I hate the look of the stock seats and moreso find them very uncomfortable.

Missed opportunity from VW not fitting Recaros in the mk3 anniversary IMO

No rot in mk3 sills is a rarity, hence why I'm going to get this built up this year and buy an old smoker to use next winter

Post by: F17BAD on 30 January 2013, 09:09
Agree all standard seats are bab

Annie ones looks horrible

Why couldn't they have used recaros with tartan centers similar to original Gti

7 that I know of. There could be more but the regulars I know of is 7 (including myself).

In fairness, all Anniversary owners won't be on this site. We are just a small portion of Golf owners on here. There are still a few hundred Anniversaries registered out there but around half of the original Anniversaries have been scrapped.  So if yous is as good as you say it is, be sure to look after her and keep her in tip top form. :)

I've had over 20mk3 Golfs (seriously) and this one is by far the best one so I will certainly be taking care of it

Some updates from Baku, Azerbaijan as thats where i am currently typing this.

My mate has a shot of the Anni this week as he sold his mk3 VR6 Variant at the weekend, and he has managed to sell the CC recaro interior i had fitted, and collect an interior i have had twice, first time in 2004 then last year

The interior in question is German spec GTI EDITION Recaros, with matching 5 door cards
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/336AC7F5-D4F5-4219-8024-D22FF9E37817-6672-0000020BB0C92C6C_zps9c8ff137.jpg)

Apologies for the shocking picture quality, its an old one i had in my photo bucket

It was originally purchased by me in 2004 from MJ interiors for my very first Golf, a 1995 Storm Grey VR6, and at the time it was thought to be one of 4 or 5 sets in the UK, there are obviously more now, but they are still quite rare and fit the GTI theme nicely i think

Other parts i have been gathering whilst here are
Coilovers, thanks to clancy
Mk3.5 steering wheel
Stock VR6 Airbox
Magnex exhaust
Replacement VR6 DOHC engine cover
Black ABC pillar trims

Im home this weekend, so all going well i will get the donor car stripped next friday, and start the conversion on the saturday, I'm looking forward to it, hopefully have it in and out in a weekend

They look really cool bud. Suit the Anni for sure. Personally I like leather so that's what I've got. Wish I had ess_three's seats though!

yeah but we don't want to know about your gimp suit..... oh and my choice would be half leather recaro's with anni cloth, I would just need to butcher another anni set of seats and pay a few ££ though!

Those German Edition Recaro seats are definitely my favourite OEM cloth variation.

Like ess_three's then, except his are MK4 Recaros.

The leather I can take or leave, I have had around 8 or 9 sets of Colour Concept seats over the years and they are more readily available than the GTI edition items, when the opportunity arose to get these back I couldn't pass it up.

With regards to re trimming seats etc, yeah I could go down this route, but I'm doing this car on a budget, that won't stretch to that unfortunately. What I'm trying to achieve is an enhanced OEM anniversary VR6

Glens seats are awesome, but I don't find them very comfortable for my shorter legs, after driving his car many years ago the mk4 seats in mk3 idea was a no go for me, as they sat too high at the front.

The GTI Edition interior is in, along with the door cards and pockets from leather door cards, HUGE thanks to my mate bobby for doing it all whilst I'm away

Ill let the pics he sent on FB do the talking.

That's the VR6 swap finished, finally.

There is a couple of minor teething issues present, creaking and knocking coilovers, which I'm not too pleased about,  faulty rev counter and that's about it to be honest

Big thanks to Mark1986 at Laws for sorting the alignment out yesterday, top job, top service, and highly recommended

I gave the car a much required wash and Hoover out yesterday, took a couple of snaps on my phone so they ain't the best

Whilst I was doing the swap I fitted the black roof lining from the donor car, along with some black pillar trims and mk3.5 cabriolet steering wheel

In this picture it looks as if I have used the standard 4 cylinder clocks, I have not, I swapped the Anniversary foils onto the VR6 cluster so it all looks original,
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/07D0798C-E6CF-47AE-9F64-84A01470A105-155-0000001951BA351F_zpsf9325dcf.jpg)

OEM rubber mats,

Under the bonnet, original factory look was just what I was after, I'm going to remove the black paint from the inlet manifold tomorrow as it looks gash
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/focker-out/9D336843-7015-4F7B-9EDC-E72E4386AA8C-155-000000195CDC7CB0_zpscc91c5ac.jpg)

Even down to an original battery bag and plug lead removal tool

That's pretty much it for now, I have got some other bits I need to fit tomorrow, but its nearing completion and I am very happy with it, I have been after another silver mk3 for a while and I'm glad I ave found a good solid basis

The dents will be seen to as soon as I can get hold of the PDR chap

More updates, it's badly needing a wash, but its a bit chilly at the minute

Anyway I had the chap from Dent devils round this morning to see what he could do with two dents that were present on the car when I bought it, as the car still wears its original paint I don't want to paint what I don't have to.

OSR Door I knew was dented at the time of purchase, now repaired, this door needs a tiny rust spot repaired at the bottom, this will be addressed when I'm away in a few weeks
Before

NSR quarter was quite badly damaged, I had my doubts about this being possible to repair without paint

To say I'm happy is an understatement, next on the agenda is the minor rust repair and sort out some wheels

That is impressive work man.

That's amazing work! :afro:

What do you mean wheels? You already have the wheels that are meant for the car.

Spacers are all those wheels need.

Yeah nice work... clean mk3 too!

Yeah, just beat it a little more with a lowering stick and space em out a bit, job done.

Thanks for all the positive replies, I can't believe how well the damage has came out.

I wasn't too clear on the wheels, I'm after another set of RX2s, so I can refurb them whilst the car still wears its original set. I'm not changing them for anything else, that thought has never entered my head.

It's getting some spacers, but its low enough, I can't stand a car that drives like junk just so it looks cool to some, I personally think it sits at a fine height, a good comprimise between looks and practicality

To be fair, the mud flaps make it look lower than it actually is so I see your point.

Loving this mate! I'm quite tempted to bang a VR in mine once I'm done with the ABF just because I miss my old VR so much lol!
