Slide the heater control in the car to hot.
Run the engine from cold with the coolant header tank cap removed.
massage the coolant hoses as the engine warms up, especially the heater matric send/ return hoses.
dont touch the electrics, mind the radiator fan.
when the coolant starts to bubble and then nearly boil, turn off engine.
wait till engine cools, top up coolant if needed, replace cap

Do you have the inline matrix safety valves? you might want to remove them as they can block up.

Don't have to set the heater to hot on a MK2, thats only for the MK1 :)

I find even after doing the hose squeezy thing, sometimes the airlock only clears after taking it for a good thrash down the motorway.  Also when squeezing the pipes rev the engine to 1.5k-2k this makes the water pump run faster which helps get the air out of them hard to reach placed
