Around a 40mm drop is the lowest you can go.

Rears are all the way down with adjusters still in & fronts are lowered to match, about 50-55mm I reckon. And yeah they're 18s

Dom with lowering do you get the exhaust banging on the rear beam?

Right brilliant guys around 40mm tops then so thats ok.

Next question is are all golf shocks the same??would a lowering kit from say a 1.4/1.6 fit my gti turbo??
Obviously the springs on a standed gti are lower but im wondering about a hole lowering kit???

40mm to be safe, but depends on ARB and car, my mate lowered his anni 100mm (but the anni has the same as the r32 arb with bigger loops) i had my old gti lowered 90mm with out rubbing on standard arb

Nope, there is hardly any clearance with it being 3" but it doesn't knock at all.

As you've said the GTI was lower from the factory that the 1.4/1.6, so what would lower a 1.4 40mm would lower a GTI less.

In short, buy a kit designed for the GTI.
