OK - there has been a lot of talk about Springs. I not sure if to go for H&R or the Eibach Sportline on my GTD. What do you guys think? :undecided:
-
Had the same dilemma prior to lowering my car, very happy with the ride height on my car form the Eibach Sportlines with the only gripe being it sits very slightly nose heavy, which I don't believe the H&R's do.
-
Based on past experience, I'd probably pick H&Rs because they tend to be slightly less harsh around town.
Both are good quality springs...and I've used both over the years.
-
I love the ride on my car with eibach sport lines. I had pro kit springs with cup shocks on my clio 197 and that was great too.
my golf is definitely better than standard IMO and sits just right. I did measure it bu i cNt remember the exact drop but it was only around 15mm lower than standard if that.
If it were DSG or a diesel it would sit a few mm lower at the front using the springs I have. My car sits very level front to back
-
Thanks guys.... Sounds like eibach sportsline might be a bit low on the front of my GTD. I don't want it to look silly so the H&Rs might be a safer option...
-
eibach do springs specific for diesel, petrol, manual or DSG - just make sure you get the right ones
some people fit manual springs to a DSG car to make it lower at the front though
eibach offer a large variety of springs to suit engine weight and gearbox spec - not sure if H&R do that - means your GTD will be lower than an equivalent GTI at the front on the same spring - if you get eibachs for the right application it will be right

OK the Sportlines then.......
-
im sure the h&r are great too but i havent tried them on the golf. ive seen a good few mk5 and mk6 on sport lines or VWR which are basically the same and they always look right to me

Eibach Sportline any day of the week, used them on mk4 golf, 2.2 Civic and loved them,
-
Great photo... Ok, I'm convinced. Just need GNJ to have his workshop finished..
-
thats who i bought my B12 kit from. was a very good price
-
I'm considering the Eibach Pro kit rather than the Sportsline. It might be better for everyday use. :undecided:
-
dont think they do a pro kit for the GTD and GTI
the 50mm lowering the sportline kit states is not true on a GTI/GTD as the car is already factory lowered - it may lower a match or a gt or whatever 50mm but not the GTI/GTD
i measured mine and it was about 15mm lower front and back.
i think for 2013 theyre advertising the sportline GTI kit as a pro kit but its the same thing.
if you were to fit pro kit springs to a GTI it wouldnt lower the car - its maybe a 25mm drop but on cars without sport suspension already fitted OEM.
-
OK thanks. They look really good but I am still worried that I spend the cash and spoil the car....
Two questions about Sportlines:-
1) Is the ride still OK on UK roads or does it jump?
2) Do you hit the road on speedbumps/ramps?
-
i can 100% say the ride is better than standard (combined with the B8 dampers).
car doesn't scrape of speed bumps or anything

2) Do you hit the road on speedbumps/ramps?
1) It's not great with just the springs, but I knew this would be the case when I fitted mine, Bilstein B8's to be added to sort handling out.
2) Never, and from looking at pics I think mine site slightly lower than Mkviken's car.
Looks 100% better for them being fitted though
-
Right...I've done more research, spoken to various people and here is my conclusion. :undecided:
The GTD is 10mm lower than a standard golf. So you need to allow for this when lowering your car. If you make it very low you need to change the whole set up e.g either coil overs or springs and shocks. I don't want to do that as it would cost too much. I also don't want to go very low or hard. I'm no spring chicken.
There is 30mm between the top of the wheel and the arch on my car.
Eibach Sportline advertise 40/50mm drop. Minus the 10 and you are looking at 30/40mm. However, you need to change your shocks otherwise it will be a very hard ride.
Eibach Pro Kit advertise 30mm drop. Minus the 10 and you are looking at a 20mm drop. The stock shocks will be OK but might need replacing a bit earlier (50k). The ride should be good. However, you will still have about 10mm above the wheel.
So I'm going to experiment with the Pro Kit. I let you know how I do in a couple of weeks. I'm probably mad but there are a lot of positive comments on the US and AU sites about this setup.
-
Don't think the pro kit is available or will lower a European GTD or GTI. The US cars sit higher than ours so their pro kit springs lower their cars but not ours. The sportline is the only spring recommended by eibach for European GTI or GTD and they will lower it 15mm or 20mm if its a DSG
You won't need new shocks but with any spring upgrade it would be advisable.
Speak to balance Motorsport and he will be able to give you all the advice you need.
Take a look at the bilstein and eibach online catalogue and check out their part numbers and products they do. I'm sure the sportline is the only kit they do. The USA site is different.
-
Confused from GTD world! I will do more research but the catalog has them listed

It says 170 HP! But you could be right....

http://www.ppcgb.com/Eibach-Sportline-Lowering-Springs--Volkswagen-Golf-VI--1K-_3/prod16866/
axle weight 1130kg/930kg
will lower it 20mm - i measured mine at 15mm lower
when i bought my kit i was told eibach were phasing out the sportline brand and were going to call everything pro kit. the main thing you need to check is the front axle weight rating for the spring and make sure its for the 55mm strut and not the 50mm fitted to lesser models.
if your in any doubt i would ring round a few specialists to make sure. i would be suprised if pro kit were right for your car.
i spoke to balance motorsport, awesome gti and sedox and all said that prokit spirngs wouldnt lower the GTI/GTD and sportline was the only way to go.
-
Ok sportlines. I'll put a photo up when she's done.. I was just nervous but I'm happy now!

I'll take some better photo once it has settled but you get the idea...

Slightly harder ride but not so you'd notice but goes round corners on rails!
