Title: Help please!
Post by: Ninja on 23 January 2013, 21:09
3 possible cars...

Mk4 r32replica. Far away. Unknown service history. Bit over budget. 20vt. 140k miles.
Mk3 vr6 seemingly mint. Good service history. Not hat far away. 100k miles. Slightly over budget.
Mk3 anni 8v, my old car. All issues resolved that it had. 140k miles. In budget. Very far away.

Also how often to timing chains need doing on Vr6

Around 100k but I have seen some fail earlier, any rattles from that area suggests they need replacing asap.

Better the devil you know

MK4 Turbo's are riddled with silly faults so unless the owner has made it mint, be prepared to be chasing split pipes and missing power for the rest of your life unless you are prepared to spend some money making it good

If I had a gun to my head then I'd go for the R32 Rep, but only because of the gun.

Looks aren't enough to help make a decision.  I would have to check them all out personally.  However, none of them would be on my short list anyway.

I personally prefer to buy cheaper cars possibly with more faults etc then go over the whole car myself.

Like the SDI I bought. Cost less than half the going rate of them normally but I've easily made that up on parts for it but I know the cambelts been done, bushes, suspension brakes etc has all been sorted. Just needs a good look to see exactly what needs doing.

If you don't want the hassle then IMO the person sells it best.

Passat the woman was so straight it was untrue. Full VW service history and she was loaded and every single tiny niggle was sorted.

My brothers gf just got rid of a Pug and forgot til the last minute it had no history as her dad had maintained it and to a good standard so there's good and bad and it's a case of a long check and good chat.

I ask tojack the cars up. Some let you and se don't.

Ok so it's vr or my old anni. Know the girl that bought it. All rust was treated and oil leak fixed. Also know cambelt done in 2011 as I did it, lol.

Keep thinking... Vr  then anni

Better the devil you know? Can't afford a dead vr6 outside my house, but it looks sooooo mint.

Chains will last alot longer than 100k if its been serviced properly. 100k is recommended for inspection only. Granted if services have been neglected, they may start rattling, but thats usually down to guides and/or tensioner.

Also, anni has been re trimmed and has new suspension. Price is 1300.

I'd also go woth the VR.

Worse MPG but I bet you'll have far less issues. 1.8t's I always find to have age related issues and never seem to be looked after anymore.

Would say
VR
Anni
1.8t

For reliability and the opposite for MPG. That said depends how well the 8v has been maintained if it's an enthusiast or just someone who's done it up init blud.

On those pictures I would go VR.
Just be sure of the shell, engines are easier to fix for most

Just been reading the advert for the VR, if it has had the chains done etc then I would go for it, looks a good buy for the money.

Well, not that I'm biased but get the Anni.

VR6 will drink fuel, I know the 8v isn't much better but it'll pay off, plus technically you know the car.
