Unless you are having problems or require something in a newer version, I would hold off updating the firmware as I have personally bricked a unit in the past which required opening it up and replacing the motherboard at a cost of £200+

I do get the point, if it ain't broke.
For the uneducated, what is the minimum version of the firmware that is needed to get the 7 digit postcode with version 8 or 9 maps?

Thanks

Maps are independent. You can install the latest maps regardless.

As for Firmware, I think 3800ish was when the full postcode search was added, but it's RNS dependent if it takes that FW or not.
Early A and B RNSs won't take the later Firmwares...the unit either won't take it, or you end up with things not working. Then you get into the problem of having to try and downgrade to get things working again - like Nevigation sound!

My advice would be to physically check which version of the RNS you have before you go any further...then think carefully about updating.

Thanks for the advice.
Mine is a "C" and without removing the Unit, I think it is SW2660 with version 6 maps.
Have seen V9 maps at reasonable price, so was hoping that might sort it, but need to think about what to do as not an essential to update.

If you need to install firmware this (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=238694.0) is the best guide.

I have done it myself with the help of ScottA and it worked fine but as Scott has said he gave it a go and bricked his system. in the end it comes down to luck. most the time it will work but there are a few times it doesn't.

Hold the setup button down for 30 secs and see if a menu comes up. It should say the HW version

That will work if the hidden menu is enabled.

One thing to consider regarding the version of the RNS: if you scan an early one that's had a later Firmware installed, it may well scan as a 'C' unit...but may not be.
I have VCDS scanned a RNS that looked to be a 'C' unit, but the sticker on the case said it was an 'A' unit.
It looked to be a 'C', behaved like a 'C'...but would not take a Firmware update.
So be warned...check carefully.

It's 5 mins to remove the RNS and physically check the sticker...it may save you hours of head scratching...or worse!
