Title: Rwd roadster wanted! Advice :)
Post by: emery1990 on 21 January 2013, 17:51
I'm feeling I want a fast rwd roadster as my next car, the only ones that I've thought of are z3m and a s2000. Looked at mx5 but cant see me enjoying their power! Porches is a no go as imagine there parts prices are too steep.

I'd have about £7k to spend.

But again at s2000 with only 168lb torque :/ My current clio as 140 odd I think and thatll be much lighter!

Advice please, running costs included :)O

God knows how it ended up in here! Mod could you move to off topic chat please :)

S2000

When your grinning through the bends at 8000rpm you wont be thinking torque figures

Numbers are just pub talk anyway, S2000 is a great car to drive

I've driven quite a few S2000's and really wonder what all the fuss is about! just boring, and not that quick!

7k is nudging towards decent BMW M3 money, absolute bargains to be had, no brainer!
Roadster or not...

Agree with M3 money. These s2000's are over rated and boring as! Only good thing about the S2000 is the roof down in summer.

You could be mega camp and get the TT roadster 225 and 4WD.

Porsche and Genuine Honda parts are about the same price

Hmm yeah I think I'll have to try the s2000, although the z3m is still top, 320hp witwooo. Would want a 01-02 plated z3m, comes with s54 340bhp engine from the e46 m3. But theyre very rare.

On a serious note, what's the idea of the rwd? M3 is a good comp but £800 disks  and running costs! Not cheap! S2k is a nice looking car! Not the fastest but mehh Who needs power when your screaming at silly rpm!

350z! Very nice!!

Also looking at your name-1990 same year as me! I'd be doing quotes 1st unless you don't mind paying silly prices! S2k seemd to be very high for some reason!

Maybe look on forums for details of running costs and common failures for all candidates before diving in there.

S2000 - snappy on the limit.  Know two people who posted theirs through hedges backwards

Z3M - seen numerous of those in the barriers at the 'ring.  Rear end is semi-trailing arms from the E30 M3, so doesn't have much finesse.

Boxter - Price you're looking at I'd consider this, although make sure you understand the risks

If you're looking to buy any RWD roadster at this price, the price is immaterial - the running costs are going to be the big thing.  If you're worried about not being manly enough in an MX-5 have a look for forced induction kits, but from the way you're talking and with a Clio, unless you've gone RWD before I'd suggest you could do a lot worse than buying an MX-5 and learning car control.

£4k on an MX-5 and £3k on car control/track/drift days would entertain me a lot more than any of the other options.

Don't get the 350z, I was looking at one about a year ago and its damn slow, I'm sure my crappy mk4 200bhp will outrun it and thats not a good thing, it looks the part but it felt really boring.

Porsches handle very well in general, I hate the look of them and that every single one looks pretty much the same, but the handling is superb. Or there's the MR2 option  :lipsrsealed:  or as a girl at work was trying to explain:

Woman: "I own a mister 2"
Me: "WTF is a mister two?
Woman: "It's made by toyota"
*me run outside to wonder what the hell she's on about*
Me: "ohhhhhhh, a MR2"

And now I can't look at any MR2's or their owners without laughing

350z is 290bhp / 300bhp and they are not that slow.

A friend has an s2000 and my mk5 gti is quicker than his s2000. Problem with s2000 is you need to know how to drive to get the most out of it. With its liftoff oversteer it can be a handful.

Post by: emery1990 on 22 January 2013, 16:53
Not keen on the 350z tbh! Yeah thats what would stop me on the z3m, 320bhp through the rear wheels, what ever car I get I'll go on a rwd course.

You can get the z3m in 2.8 180bhp (tuned to 220bhp quite easily ive read, lighter than the z3m too)

Or the z3m 3.0l 220bhp, All for much cheaper than the z3m, all the m's for sale are pre 2001 and for 7kish.

The 2.8's go from 3-5k, then maybe 1k on tuning.

Why are M discs so expensive? Are they just massive or something!? I'll look at running costs.

Gone off s2000 not liking the need to rev so hard to get power.

By an MX5 and learn to steer from de rear with 115bhp then bolt ona  supercharger and FMIC and go everywhere sideways in a cloud of rubber smoke.

Either that or buy a good boxster S. S2000s have a great engine but the chasis is considered to be pretty poor, both z3 and z4 are pretty awfull as well, especially as you sit to far back in the body.

Not to keen on the old jap sport cars tbh!

Ill take a look I to the mx5 , what mk ? Expecting supercharger to cost 3k+ so mx5 of around 4k would be best ! I have read that even though the 2.0l are faster the 1.8 and 1.6 are much more fun to driver, more rev happy ? Have has a soft spot for mx5 always had one on forza and gt etc !

Z3 girly girls car, saved only by the straight 6.
MX-5, good car a bit slow. Default roadster option.
So out of that list i'd have the S2000.

You've made the mistake of looking at only engine output, and even worse peak figures. The S2000 is fairly short geared, and makes it's peak torque after the Clio (and indeed all the cars listed above) has run out of revs.

The upshot being, the S2000 feels quick (not rocket ship quick, but enough to have good fun) and pretty nice to drive (EDIT: apart from in the wet ). Just be above 6000rpm when you need to move, and be prepared to change gear a lot.

S2000 is an alright car just annoying to have to rev all the time. MX5 drifts easier if you want to learn.

Errrr, revving the engine and changing gear 'all the time' is kind of the point of a sports car.  Revving in particular is specifically the point of an S2000.

Maybe an automatic Micra would be a better long term choice for your particular demands?

Personal choice would be an s2000.  I think its quite difficult to find a roadster without looking girly!

Moreso on an S2K though. There's really no power at low revs and I'm trying to say it's an odd car for a beginner. MX5 is a far better bet for learning in and far easier to drift.

Standard anyway in the form of my old bosses customers cars. :lipsrsealed:

Good vid Nick. I love that song, what is it?

I like the look of your mx-5 actually. Don't get me wrong I didn't mean to offend, I think its just that I don't like them in standard form. They need to be sat lower, with a decent set of rims and subtle body mods. I also greatly dislike them in Red for some reason. Much prefer darker coloured ones.

Seems like I'm sucking up a bit I know! But I'm sorry, I'm just not really a fan.

Convertibles are great.  Just buy any you like.  Never listen to creepy homophobic commentators trying to put you off something they would love to do but have not got the bottle to do.

The BMW and the VW in the list below are both convertibles.

"Creepy Homophobic"

I'm neither - I'm in the Navy ffs!

"not got the bottle to do it"

Fair enough, the only rwd car I've ever driven is a BMW 120d, so don't really have any knowledge or experience with regard to drifting, but don't have the bottle to do it - have a word!

I'd love to have a drift session tbf. I am confident enough in my driving skills to think I may be able to pick it up with a little training, its hardly something many (especially enthusiasts) would "bottle" is it now.

It's an ugly duckling track but I can't remember the name of it off hand. Glad you like the vid. The car stands me at about £1600 so it proper cheap RWD fun. They aren't the manliest things in standard trim but with little effort they can look pretty tough.

I do admit I do like your mx5 horney, was looking at the classifieds and wasn't too sure but yours looks pretty mean ! £1600 you say? What model is yours, 3k for a sc and that's a cheap fast car! Oh I'm not into drifting at all, so wouldn't need it for that !

Mines a 1991 1.6 V-Spec import. It came as standard with the (Very marmite but I love it) tan interior, Nardi wheel, nardi gearknob, strut braces and an LSD. The guy before me added the wheels, suspension and induction kit. I paid £1250 for it. I then added lowering springs to the Koni dampers it had and then bolted on the front splitter, rear spoiler and go faster stickers.

Though all roadsters (edit: made after the 70's) are girly cars, blokes can get away with a targa but a full drop top is.... .

That is a price that would make me think really hard about reasons not to buy it.

have you looked at a kit car like caterham,westfield,lotus7,tiger,  my dads just bought a tiger for his 50th bday had a drive a few times and for pure driving and fun its awsome you have to actually drive the car not let the car do it for you. i wouldnt rule them out for a project weekend car.
