Trying to save a few quid on the boring stuff so i can spend more on the more exciting things like coilovers. Will this cheap ebay kit be ok or are you best buying genuine with things like cambelts?
Cambelt and tensioner kit

A gates kit will be ok, they are good quality

Gates and INA are good makes. Never go cheap on your cambelt!!!

Things not to save money on are...
1.cam belt kit
2.any engine component
3.tyres

Agreed however gates make a lot of oe stuff so they are fine to use.

I have used a "cheap" gates kit off ebay.... nothing to worry if belt comes from gates, conti or dayco.
tensioner, e.g. INA, SKF,.....

As above, i generally use Dayco cambelts and Gates power steering and aux belts.

No point spending money on fancy stuff until car is running correctly

continental cambelts FTW
Got a genuine audi one on at mo but used the conti ones on all other engines we done

I don't know to be honest, the only variation i can think of is you were to retro fit a manual tensioner which are cheaper than the auto ones.
