Afternoon All,
I have just purchased my first vw a golf estate which by its previous life had a 2.0 16v ABF engine fitted. On inspection the alternator belt is damaged and must hit the water pump pulley, Im sure this would have something to do with the engine swap but not certain what i need to do/modify to rectify this problem.
Im thinking that the alternator or water pump is incorrect i.e. taking from the 1.8 engine and never sorted.
Any ideas would be very helpful
Thanks pics below

They obviously didn't have a donor car. Or something failed and they replaced with the old parts.
I can only think that fitting abf parts will solve this.

If i could get a photo of an ABF engine it would help narror it down slightly.. It looks to me that the water pump pulley doesnt look correct, if you look at the photo you can see where the belt is hitting as its shiny on the water pump..
Also im new to VW so not sure where this engine has come from other than its an ABF engine lol Soz

Heres my old engine

oh thats different to mine, i dont have the air con, i have the crank, power steering and water pump on the ribbed belt, then i have the alternator and crank and tensionor on the serpintine belt, therefore i dont have the air con pump. I would imagen its because i have a estate C with an ABF engine conversion.
-
Its the same engine as yours mate, the power steering pump tensions the belt for the water pump,i know yours doesn't have air con but im sure the only difference is belt length.somethings not quite right hard to tell from your pics
-
Maybe the water pump or pump pulley is wrong not giving you the clearance needed.

just taken a few more pics ill upload in a min, also edit last post as i was wrong lol... Had it running and the water pump pulley looks incorrect as it rubs on the belt.

On your picture my alternator belt runs back inbetween my belt tensioner and above the water pump pulley and not below the water pump like on yours.
The belt is hitting the water pump pulley so i could do with a photo of the correct pulley for my engine.
-
We could do with a pic of a setup without aircon pump.

I have taken these photos where you can see the alternator belt touching the water pump pulley. Im wondering if the water pump pulley is the wrong one. Which makes me wonder has the water pump give way over heating the engine "headgasket" so the old owner put any water pump on to sell it.

I got it yestersay, i drove it 50 miles home and the temp never moved, when i took them photos this morning it started ok slightly lumpy but cleared once reved but i looked in the oil cap and it had a slight bit of white mayo and the water seems ok with no egg smell. Not sure???? What are these engines like with head gaskets its done 118k.
-
just makes me think that the water pump has been changed and makes me think why lol. I need a pic of the correct water pump pulley to compaire against mine, Im certain this is the issue with this alternator belt... I need a new water pump pulley and tensioner and belt.
Anyone else got any ideas

These engines are pretty bullet proof tbh and headgaskets on these are not a common failure ,mine did 170000 and still going strong ,only removed for 1.8t,
Probably a faulty temp sensor you got,bit of mayo on the oil cap is not uncommon in this cold weather.

i think my engine that is installed had an aircon setup but the air con pump was removed which means that the belt setup without aircon needs a different water pump pulley which could suggest that i have an aircon water pulley when i need an non aircon water pulley and belt. ???????????lol

Think we might be heading in the correct directrion as
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK3-GTi-16V-SHARAN-MK1-WATER-PUMP-PULLEY-WITH-AIRCON-037121031F-/390468308358?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5ae9b98d86
this is what is fitted to my water pump and i dont have aircon hench why the belt rubs on it. Cant find what i need or how to replace these yet tho lol
Thanks

No probs mate, so a non aircon water pump pulley and a new non aircon belt and your sorted, happy days
-
thats what im thinking lol. I wonder why that has never been tried by the previous owner.
-
does anyone have a picture of a non A/C water pump pulley...

Yea its nice looking and will serve me well hopefully main issues where alternator belt rubs on the water pump which i think i know what the problem is and the rear drivers side caliper seems to stick on.

been thinking about this and thought to myself why not just put the air con pump on therefore putting it back to how it should b.
