Title: What a day or do I mean a week UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
Post by: theclash on 17 January 2013, 20:50
Last week I stripped out all front carpets and sound deadening after finding water in passenger footwell
Door membrane good, matrix good, blower seal good, scuttle clear, door seals good, sunroof rubber pipe good and clear
So a week later while sat outside on ramps while I replace sump gasket I look in passenger footwell and water  but no traces of where it as run in from. I was lay in bed last night and convinced myself it was the front sunroof drain tubes the inch metal pipe behind the headlining that must have rotted and leaking water and it's finding it's way through trim and onto the floor. So today out came the headlining and low and behold....no rot or leak  :embarrassed: next step is windscreen out resealed and put back although there is no evidence of wet under the glovebox but it's the only thing left to check. I've currently no headlining no passenger or rear seats carpets or centre consol in the car it looks a sorry state but sooner I find this leak the better
God knows what my neighbours think of me usual passing comment is " messing with that car again "

Have you checked the rear lights? and or tailgate & seal?

One MK2 I had let water in under the rear light cluster...

Problem with water is it will lye in the lowest point but that don't mean it is coming from that area....

Other options could be the seals in the bulk head but these seems unlikely!

Checked blower motor cover & seal??

Rear off car is nice and dry
I replaced and sealed bonnet cable grommet when I first got the car (4 years ago) with genuine vag that was leaking in drivers footwell
Hopefully with headlining and seats door cards carpet out I will be able to trace it time will tell but hopefully not to long though cause it looks like a proper shed inside

Hmm...you've mentioned and checked most places already...my tip may have been on windscreen seal or heater blower opening under bonnet but you have checked that also. Another worthy place of checking is under the ecu. There's only a bonded in metal plate covering the hole there, mine was leaking there too and if your car is on a slant it MAY be running towards passenger side...but kind of unlikely.

When I had a leak and couldn't find the source: Dry everything out again in the footwell, grab some white chalk and just draw a perimeter around the area of the leak...or even colour the whole footwell in. Should show up any water lines and you can go from there.

@X4MGS...sorry for OT, I just saw your name and thought woot? I'm sure I bought a few things off the bay the other day and sellers name was the same. It was actually you haha. Bought the rear dome rubbers and the battery strips. Thanks for the speedy postage, items came straight away!

I would go back to the basics... Are you sure the door card membrane aint leaking.... 100%????

Get someone to hold a hose over the car and sit inside and watch for a small leak...

Sprinkle some flour on the floor and then you should be able to trace where the water is at least coming from. Not too much or it'll be a real mess!

Firstly a big thanks to everyone for help and suggestions
I have found the source of my leak today I hope this helps anyone in a similar position
I got my mate to hosepipe over various parts of the car, windscreen sunroof etc while I sat in car and waited for the water. It seems the edge of the passenger door although touching the roof gutter seal is letting water in it seems to have lost its firmness and collapsed gone soft.
So my plan is next week is to either adjust the door striker to pull door in more or bend the door frame a little failing that it will need a new roof gutter

not sure if its been said but in my mk3 i dried it all up then put talcum powder all over (ripped up carpet) it gave me an idea where it was coming from. then i realised it wasent a seal at all. i had the smallest little hole near the boot roof where it was welded together. TINY little hole made all my back seats wet and everything. who would of known lol.
