Do a little digging about on here using the search function. There is a wealth of knowledge already.
Suffice to say that they are worth it, get a DSG, spec as high as you can afford, if you want to tune it then performance is much higher than a standard GTI and the engines are very good as long as they are serviced to schedule.

DSG is worth looking for IMO. I've done the shifting thing already in my 50 years, so it's nice to have a new toy that is also reliable and quicker...by a little. <This should start an arguement

You're on the right track mate.
My only main regret from buying my Gti was that I wanted the bulletproof manual box instead of the DSG and I wish that wasn't the case, as it seems it's a whole lot more reliable than the media and journo's first portrayed.
Plus which with the ED30 you get the KO4 turbo which means far more tuning capability than the standard Gti and it's diddy little KO3 turbo. By the way the KO3 if done right is still good for 300bhp, so it's plentiful for country roads.

Sorry for butting in guys but does a stock ed30/Pirelli actually feel a lot faster than a stock GTI? This is something i'm disappointed with my 55 plate with DSG. It certainly whisks you along at a rapid pace but theres not a great deal of feel/pull unless you catch it on boost. Been contemplating swapping to a MK6 or MK5 Pirelli/ED30 and would be interested in hearing any thoughts.

Prior to my Ed30 I had a MkIV 1.8T and there is absolutely no comparison between the two. And I loved my 1.8T.
Everything about the car is superb, I love the wheels, I love the seats, I love the gear knob. I LOVE EVERYTHING about it. The engine is as gentle or as savage as you want it to be and a stage 1 remap will transform it to another level.
I honestly don't think I'd ever sell it, I'll still be driving it in 20 years time.

Had a stock mk5 now got a stock ED30 and yes. Big difference. DSG is useful and allows for play and lazy driving alike. DSG box is intelligent and if needed it will drop into a kind of sports mode for short bursts.

I used to have an edition 30 dsg, I absolutely loved it! Advantages of a ED30 over a standard golf are the bigger turbo and the engine internals are stronger, making it a bit more tunable! Even in standard spec it was pretty epic. A decent exhaust, air intake and remap will get you well over 300bhp!

I'd do this if I hadn't spent £4k on my 05 Gti and only owned it for a year. Or alternatively if I had sh!t loads of money....

A 5 year old Ed30 makes no sense when there are S3's to be had. None of that horrible banging from the front axle at every slippy junction.

How can you make a comment like that when you have those cars!
Current vehicles... VW '06, Mercedes '02, Ford '04, Fiat '01, Vauxhall '12, BMW '98, Yamaha '04, Honda '04, Nissan '07 All working as new.

As the previous owner of a new Mk5 with bluefin it was my experience that the front wheel drive Golf was rubbish with right foot squashed hard to the carpet at low speed (crash bang whallop from the front and not a lot of speed). The 4wd S3 just grips and goes.
Within my list of cars is a motorhome, a roadster, a 5 seat convertible, an mpv, a 4x4, a very fast sports car, an offroad motorbike and a ka. The ka has the best steering btw.

so to get the best performance is just press and go? I suppose its swing and hope inthe steering as well hence the underpowered Ka feeling the best over a performance car and roadster
Usual responses as ever.

I had a KA too and it was brilliant, despite some of it's major issues with rust and poor build quality. The rest of this post is very defensive though, I think maybe it's because all you ever do is grief Golf Gti's on a Golf Gti forum, it might not be, but I think it is...

Yes that's what 4 wheel drive gives you. Traction, but thats it !
Trade off in the S3 is understeer, lifeless steering and oh more understeer.
Ed30/MkV Gti are light on their feet but that makes them much more fun. Bigger smiles as you pile on the miles ! Isn't that what driving a performance car is all about ?
Where is the fun in just 'grips and goes' ?
And I have a diesel 4x4 that would muller an S3 ( in a straight line ), and have had a Golf 4motion so can speak with experience.
Your car collection sounds like a scrapyard though

I'll bet my ML is faster than your diesel
