Title: GTD Engine Differences/Specifications
Post by: PaddyWagon on 15 January 2013, 20:52
Hey guys need a little help, was out today viewing a few GTDs with the view to buying one but im left a little confused and suspicious. I viewed both an 09 and a 10 but they had one very obvious difference. The oil filler caps on the engines are on opposite sides. the 09 on the left side and the 10 on the right side of the engine. Been trolling the internet all evening looking to see was there a change in engine between 09 and 10 but have come up with nothing. If not then one of the dealers is telling porkies and I need to find out which. Last thing i want to do is invest in what I believe to be a genuine car only to find out its not a 170 engine under the bonnet. Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated and hopefully shed some light on something Im probably missing

Have tried uploading images of both engines but cant put them up at the moment

At the risk of confusing things.....

I have a 140 GT (so not GTD) which has the cap on the left hand side. It's an 09 plater; but I;m sure I've seen pics of later 140's, and the 140 engine in other VAG cars, with the cap on the right. Or am I dreaming?

Perhaps there was a change at some point; and I remember when I had access to ELSA/ETKA there were many different variants of the 140CR engine listed so perhaps they do change these things for some reason...

Well I've just looked at ETKA and my GTD engine code is CBBB the oil filler cap is on the left looking at the front of the engine as ajmoir36 picture shows which is the same as my Jan 2010. They also show the CBDC, CBAA, CBAB, CJAA have the same valve cover.

The oil filler cap on 2.0ltr diesel CBBB 170PS Golf 04/09-05/10 , CLCA 110PS Caddy, CFFA 136PS Golf, CFFB 140PS Golf, CFGB 170PS Golf 05/10-05/11 is on the right.

The oil filler cap on 1.6ltr diesel CAYB 90PS Golf/Jetta, CAYC 105PS Golf/Jetta is on the right.

VW claim 170PS which is 168bhp.

Don't know if it helps but mine is a 12 plate and its on the right.  Makes you wonder what the difference is between the two engines

...CBBB 170PS Golf 04/09-05/10 on the Left
...CFGB 170PS Golf 05/10-05/11 is on the right.

Looking at it the 2010 model you looked at must have been built after May to move it to the right and have the CFGB engine. In which case there is no problem with either one.

I wonder what the improvements are in the engine?

Hey Guys thanks for the input. Has helped me hugely. In the end I didnt go with either of the two I looked at on the Day. I managed to purchase an 11 reg White 3 Dr GTD. Because of it being an 11 it does indeed have the oil filler cap on the right hand side of the engine block, engine code CFGB. Am I right in assuming that this is the most recent CR 170 engine GTDs? As Ajmoir36 also points out I wonder what improvemets are in this engine over the CBAB and CBBB CR engines....? Id be interested to find out.

On a side note, what a car the GTD is. Havent stopped grinning since I picked it up a week again. Changed from an 05 reg GTI and in no way missing the power. Very pleased with my purchase.

I'd be interested to know if they have been playing with the manual gearbox over the engine.

Well over on a few German forums they're reckon VW has been messing with the car ecu/map. Now I havent a word of german so was relying on google translate so I may have misunderstood. I searched Mk6 GTD CFGB into google and ended up on these german forums. Some members agrued that the newer model (mine) wasnt as powerful as earlier models both on BHP and top speed side. They were of the opinion VW had changed certain things in the new model to make it more refined and quieter all round which has seen them de-tune the car slightly for emmisions and noise purposes.
Now Im not sure what they are basing this on and google translate didnt make it the easiest to read but just said id relay what I had found.

I'll try get a photo up soon Cliff

No engine cover.

The engine variant in the picture shown has got the EGR valve above the throttle valve, the newer engines 2011-2012 and onwards incorporate the EGR valve with EGR cooler behind the engine just below the turbo.
