Title: Timing chain tensioner, design issues = new engine if it fails
Post by: Snoopy on 13 January 2013, 18:59
 :undecided: http://golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43654

We have had a few failures of this on forum members cars already and they have needed new engines.
for example this one. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=233727.0

If there is a new tensioner design that now has a better backup ratchet system that does not allow the tension to release totally on the chain with lack of oil pressure/seal failure/sludge/etc, i think i will replace mine at some point. (cheaper than a new engine if it does fail)

Just need to check the new part numbers off that golfmk6 thread and get or find the elsawin how too.

Not a failure of something else attached to the MK6 engine.

Just read some of that MK6 Forum link...there was me saying the MK6 was a better platform than EA113 on ED35/R :lipsrsealed:

This did make me laugh (Post 29):

A loud clatter followed by an everlasting silence that signifies the demise of your turbo stratified injection powerplant.

I thought having a timing chain was supost to make things more reliable than a belt, how wrong i was. The Mini JCW seems to have tensioner problems with the chain also.

Some workshop pages I scanned from Elsawin if you want to give it a go
The tensioner is shown in this procedure.
