Hey all,
I have been doing some repairs on my golf and I found this pipe that is leaking oil. Is it an oil breather line? It is the pipe that goes into a plastic box. It is located directly behind the dipstick and it leads up to the plastic box on the rocker cover.

It is indeed the breather hose. It's very common for them to break, from the hot/cold cycles and age, the rubber they're made out of becomes brittle and easily cracks and snaps. There should be a horseshoe clip that holds it into the black box. Remove that, and you should see an O-ring. Give it all a good clean and replace the O-ring if needed.

also, i don't see a clip on the photo that should normally be there? is this below the pipe or just not there?
if not there, get a new o-ring and clip, that can help. only 100% solution is to get new pipe but vw want a fortune for a new one.

Thats the wrong pipe. That also looks like a rubber pipe. Correct1 is a hard plastic 1.

If you need one of these breather pipes I have one here in good nick

Thanks for the info guys!
The pipe that is currently there is made from a soft plastic and it is crap to be honest. It is split into two pieces and jointed with a crappy plastic joiner.
I say i will buy this kit off ebay

Main pipe (bendy long one) is the correct one, the second short one might not be.
But for 20£ get it..... you don't wanna know how much VW take for just that long one!
