Title: Help needed!
Post by: Tinkertaylor on 13 January 2013, 15:30
Hi all, I'm a long time lurker and first time poster, so go easy on me!

Yesterday saw the arrival of my first mk6 gti (59 plate tornado red), and I couldn't be happier with it. Well maybe I could, so I could do with some advice...

Firstly, I've read a lot about iPhone compatibility with the vw Bluetooth. I have an iPhone 4 which will not (in any way) connect with the car. The phone doesn't discover the car, and if the car discovers the phone, it tells me it's not compatible. The wife's Nokia connects with no trouble, so what do I need to get the iPhone to work?

Secondly, I seem to be missing the compartment from the rear centre console (below the double air vents for the rear passengers). Can this be bought as a separate part? I don't even know what goes there!

Finally, does anyone have any recommendations for genuine mats? Mine are a little tired and I'd like to replace.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

You cant connect to two phones at once - it looking for you wifes phone.  At the same time you get the car to look for another phone in settings, get the iPhone to look for the car, by going into general, settings, bluetooth and click on 'VW Phone'.

Cheers guys.

I've read a few threads on this forum about the Bluetooth module swap for iPhone compatibility. Any idea on cost? Would the same module be needed for the iPhone 5? I only ask as my upgrade is due in May.

I've just sourced some genuine black vw mats, £40 for a set of 4 (sounds reasonable).

I've scoured the 'net for the rear cup holder with no joy. Anybody out there got an idea on a product no? Otherwise i'll have to pop to the dealers to see if they can shed any light.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm making some progress: genuine mats purchased and in place, MID cables sorted, part number for the rear cup holder identified (I'll be giving stoke VW a call tomorrow to see what they can do), and bottle opener bought!

I've located a Bluetooth module that seems like it will do the trick (eBay item number 400390039845). It's described as plug and play, but is this really the case? Will it need to be coded in any way by VW?

Finally, the gromit that holds the string that supports the parcel shelf has broken on one side. It looks like the gromit is part of the plastic boot trim. Has anyone replaced this? The car is out of warranty so I don't suppose I've any chance of a freebie.

Cheers.

Rear cup holder sorted, thanks to Premier VW in Leek. £50 all in, but I'm happier knowing it's how it should be. They also sorted me out with a new gromit for the parcel shelf - I have to drill the old one and push the new one through, but it beats buying the full trim.

Just bluetooth and iPhone to sort now. I'm bidding on a couple of modules online, so hopefully one will come through...

Are rear cup holders not standard on the mk6 GTI, on the pull down part below the rear vents?

Yes they are std Paul but for some reason when Tinker brought the car they were missing....

Good to hear you've sorted it Tinks...

The guy I bought it from (who'd had it from new) said that one of his kids had broken it and he'd never bothered getting a replacement. Despite the fact it'll probably never be used, my OCD demanded that it was dealt with!

Hmm, interesting. I took delivery of my GiT in Aug 10 and hadn't opted for Xenon's but mine still has the rear LED light-cluster.
A chap in my area bought his GiT in Jan 11 WITH Xenon's (and thus LED DRL's) but his rear lights were not the LED's, i.e. the early cluster.
I told him to go back to his dealer and enquire why this is.

How odd...

Just plug n play and a straight swap no coding was needed on mine, so yours should be the same

Update!

Managed to get a few jobs done at the weekend. New rear cup holder in place (after a bit of fiddling), along with factory mats and new bluetooth module. Bluetooth install was a breeze - literally 30 seconds and I had my iPhone connected.

As a result, and because it stopped raining/snowing for an hour or two, I managed a bit of a clean and polish:

I also installed some number plate LEDs (again, a much easier job that I might have thought).

Next up will be the rear Golf R LEDs. Can anyone recommend a reputable source?

Thanks.

Looks great

Got my R led's from here without issue;

http://www.carsystems.pl/golf-mk6-r20-led-taillights-for-uk-and-rhd-market-adapter-5k0945093ag-5k0945094ag,id384.html

Where did you get your no. Plate led's from and are they fitted with resistors to avoid error messages?

I ordered the number plates lights from convert2xenon, based on some good feedback from other threads:

http://www.convert2xenon.co.uk/license-plate-lights/522-volkswagen-golf-mk6-mkvi-led-license-number-plate-upgrade-unit.html

It was a two minute job to fit the new units, and the supplied 'resistors' (or whatever they might be!), prevent any bulb-out warnings on the dash. They really are incredibly bright!

Thanks for the tip on the R leds. My only concern is that it states that cars pre 2010 (mine is September 2009) need a new BCM. Can anyone shed any light on this? Also, where could I go for the coding? Local dealers?

  Interesting photo!

When was your car registered? Mine is a December 09 and the R LEDs went in with zero problems

Registered September 09. I'd take a punt, but at 469 Euros I'd rather be sure that either a) they'll work, or b) a new BCM (whatever it might be) isn't a big deal!

Mine was registered sept 09
No updated BCM needed here
