Well , today came and i went and purchased my mk2 golf 16v in the Infamous Oak Green.. First up .. here are the pics , questions after the pics.

and

Car has .. Full Scorpion Exhaust / Koni Shocks / G60 Brakes with Grooved Discs and (cant remember name of pads) / Braided hoses .. Car does run superb ... 2nd and 3rd are great ... better than my ABF Ibiza Gti i had.
Some issues ..
1. On steering to left full lock , there is a "clunk" noise .. what could this be ?
2. When accelerating in 1st , 2nd .. engine seems to move or jolt fwd and back ... what could this be ?
I have rough ideas, just need confirmation and rough prices .
Well... plans are... sort out the issues .. get the debadged grille , debadge the rear , possibly new manifold from Awesome and new thermostat from awesome and 3 pole fan switch too ... and get some Recaros , add my Origin B2 and PDA for the SatNav.
I see some good times ahead...

1. cv joint unless or steering rack as its power steering if it doesnt whine on full lock then its probably cv joint
2. engine mount or mounting bracket at the front can confirm this if you can feel the engine move if you lift the clutch in 1st
neither are major but id check the engine mount at the front straight away as if there is alot of movement it may well have snapped the bracket and the engine then balances on the oil filter.

Thanks for the replies. Those were my initial thoughts about the problems, car is now sat on drive for a few days while i am up in scotland ... car going into garage for MOT next week and for definate diagnosis of problems and they shall be remedied in the week.
Surprised at how well the interior cleans up ... also need a small trip to bodyshop for some touch up and spray work in august ... like i said, car seems to be superb in 2nd and 3rd ...
1 more thing, is it normal for the engagement of 5th gear to be a little peculiar ? as in ... i have to push down a little and then engage 5th ...
-
long time no see piggy
Ah Grasshopper!
See I told you it wasn't good for your health!
-

The normal problem with the gearbox is going from 1st to 2nd.
What you describe I think is more likely to be to do with alignment and can be sorted with a special tool, either that or it's possible you may need a gearchange bush repair kit, which isn't too expensive.

not normal no alignment might be out abit needs to be realigned garage can do it easily only thing i never noticed about 5th is in an 8v where i go to change up again cause the engines getting loud and relise im already in 5th :S you shouldnt have that prob in a valver
-
my fifth gear was the same vw fitted an improved linkage set and its perfect now. it was like selecting reverse before?
-
Thats exactly the prob .. its like putting it into reverse a bit ...
Do you know exactly what part and who you went too ?
Looks like there is a little shopping list coming on at the mo ...
-
i got the other problem i get reverse instead of 1st
-
Awesome do a linkage kit that ive been told is very good its an upgrade look on their site
-
i got one cheers but the cars up for sale at the minute so im being lazy and not putting it in
-
WoW .. i just had a quality surprise , just thumbing through the receipts of what the car has had done...
Well, i was planning to get the stainless manifold from Awesome at a nice cost of £235 ... well, like i said .. going through the receipts, it appears the car has already had one fitted from Awesome ... that has just saved me some money / time and thought ...
ooo well, have to spend money elsewhere then ...
-
Right then, regarding the possible engine mount problem...
I have been to the car and checked if there is any movement in the engine when pushing by hand , trying to rock it etc.. there doesnt seem to be any sign of a mount perishing or movement ... any other possibilities...
Car is going to Awesome next week anyway ...
-
not sure could be the gear box mount thats had it but normally if you can feel the lump move on pulling away or changing gear its that front mount, maybe its something else completely differnt gearbox or clutch if its going in for a service see if they can find anything.
-
Stand in front of your car with the bonnet up, get someone to sit in drivers seat with hand brake on and then bring up clutch as if pulling away. If the engine tries to jump into your arms theres a broken mount, usually the front, the mounts are pretty easy and cheap to replace.
-
Do what elnigel said. You wont be able to test the mount by hand.
-
If it is rocking backward and forward then it will be the front mount. The gearbox mount is usually too solid to move. Once you have done as above, see if you can get a g60 mount or maybe even go a little more expensive and get a vibratechnics one or something similar. You will notice the difference
-
I got a vibra technics one and want it stiffer (oooo er missus) so am going for a solid mount.
-
Car is in garage at the mo, having MOT too ... once i get it back , ill know what is up and then act accordingly. Wandered over to CGTi and someone does solid mounts for £45 ... so if it needs, i shall be getting from them.
No doubt i will post up what is wrong later , along with a number of questions ...
