Ok so I had my car in the garage as it was blowing. When it came out of the garage it was fine for about a week or two. I noticed some pink sealer around the turbo where the downpipe attaches to it. This pink sealer is no longer there and the blowing is back. So what I was wondering is, is it a gasket that has gone allowing the blowing to come back? If so does anyone have a part number for the gasket please

start it up from cold and have a feel about. there is a gasket there which could have given up, there about £3.50 from vw, or it could be the weld that goes onto the flange for the turbo is leaking which would be a perfect excuse for a decat! try just tightening the nuts 1st
if it is the gasket its not a big job really, undo 4 bolts, lower downpipe, gasket off, new1 on and bolt back up. i guess you could put a smidge of sealer in there too. hope thats helpful
-
What do you mean weld that goes to the flange? They put on a new flexi pipe for me so I know that's good but maybe they didn't put a new gasket on it so it could be jiggerd? My knowledge isn't great about 1.8t ha ha. But cheers mate I will have a go when the missus is at work tomorrow :)

you're not meant to use any sort of sealer on those joins, just the standard metal gasket. Sounds like they couldn't be arsed to do it properly so used some exhaust paste
-
ahh i see. new gasket then!
-
Does anyone know what the gasket looks like? I've just googled it but it came up with a double gasket? :undecided:

Cheers mate

I know this is an old thread but this is exactly what I need doing I was just wondering if anybody would have a rough idea how much a garage should charge for this or if there's anyone near Dartford that can do it and fancies earning a few pennies tomorrow
Cheers

It's a b!tch of a job as the nuts aren't that accessible and there's always the possibility of the studs snapping (as I have found out before)
-
Glad my turbo/manifold and turbo/downpipe don't have gaskets anymore
-
Gaskets are fine, the paste isn't great as it can come off and block the cat up.

Glad my turbo/manifold and turbo/downpipe don't have gaskets or paste anymore lol
Gone are the days of dealing with rusty exhaust nuts/bolts and not a second too early either
-
managed to get it done for 70 quid so no longer sounds like a tractor but I think they may have caught a pipe whilst doing it as i have had to top the water up twice since yesterday gutted
-
They shouldn't have been anywhere near any of the coolant pipes, DONT USE WATER as coolant! find the leak and repair, get underneath and look around the back of the block for a leak.
-
Well they said they fixed a water leak whilst doing the work (that i didnt notice i had) and only noticed it after i took it home and it said STOP check coolant (clearly sh@t myself) but just used water for temporary measure. i think i have now fixed the leak and will be getting some proper stuff asap

Ah ok,
Yes its probably one of the coolant banjos, make sure you add some coolant in with that water ASAP because if it freezes it can cause problems
