Title: Mk5 to Mk6
Post by: Mr Lees on 12 January 2013, 13:32
Had my mk5 GTI for 6 years now , still love it but mileage getting on for 67k and I can see some large bills looming, so Im debating wether to jump ship to a newer MK6 . Seen a 2009 black DSG GTI with 36k miles for 16.5k. Has full leather, parking camera, IPod and touch screen radio. It doesnt have Satnav which is a bit of a bum as I have installed the RNS 510 into my mk5 and love it.

anything to look our for especially regarding DSG as I have never had one. Also my MK5 has been remapped by RTech to around 245-250 bhp with no problems. I am pretty sure the MK6 will feel a bit sluggish compared so was wondering what my options would be regarding mk6 remap.. bluefin ?

The trouble I have is trying to justify the large difference in cost to swap when actually my Mk5 is still a great car, and part ex i am getting offered around £6.5k for a manual 2007 with 67k , vw service, cambelt done at 42k 5dr , Ipod, Multi function wheel, 18" monza, full leather, 510 RNS satnav/dvd, parking sensors etc

appreciate any thoughts / advice,,,,, thanks

67k is nothing. The mk6 is an improvement on the mk5 but not a massive one. I had two mk5s and am on my second mk6 so can tell you a thing or two!! All manuals though. Not fussed about DSG, if the car has it then fine but darned if i'd pay extra for it!!

Bluefin good on a mk6, smooth power and not the quickest re-map by any means but very useable power, no wheelspin issues like some remaps give you. Sometimes less is more, and sometimes less is less!! RTech will do a mk6 map too and there is plenty of choice out there (see site sponsors for discounted remaps!!).

So, is the mk6 worth masses more money than a mk5? Not a chance. BUT if you've made your mind up to change then now is the time before the mk5 swallows some big bills which is money you will never see again.

Toss a coin for it.

Take it with you to the Mk6 as it slots straight in, its the same unit the Mk6 uses after all.

Sounds like 'Man maths' to me.

I went the other way ; Mk6 Gti to Mk5 Gti ED30.

Mk6 is smoother, quieter, more refined and more frugal. That's it though.

Mk5 handles better, mine is quicker and is more fun. It has more charachter. Feels like it wants to play all the time. Mk6 does not have that and you may miss that.
