Hello can someone help I have a 1998 Mk4 AGU Turbo I have a noise when in first gear. At tick over and every other gear perfect no noise. The way to describe it would be a rumble help please ?
-
That will be a bearing gone inside the gearbox.
-
I thought someone would say gearbox I have never heard of anything like it before. Like I said as soon as you are in second quite as a mouse
:undecided: Looks like a Change of gearbox then
-
time for a 6 speed
-
If I didn't have a 5 speed here it would be

Ok its getting a bit worse first gear the same but the clutch seems low biting point and not have same noise low revs in others gears still gearbox or clutch ? What are the symptoms of a dual mass flywheel and clutch going ?
-
Could be the flywheel or maybe a cv joint.
-
99% sure not a cv Joint but I am thinking flywheel but does that not make a noise when clutch down ?
-
Hmmm... I'd say throw out bearing which means a new clutch assembly.
You'll have to get a car mechanic to have a listen to the noise to be sure. But the fact it's only in first gear narrows it down somewhat.
-
No too be honest was going to take it somewhere tomorrow I have a spare gearbox here so if its that not a problem lol
-
Ok took it for MOT passedwith flying colours taking to a VW specialist today to get it looked at. I have noticed the aux belt tensioner is moving a bit too much but that could not be it surely
-
Ok so that was a waste of time I think he had less idea than me  Spoke to a mate who is a mechanic he said suggested changing the oil in the gearbox. hopefully that will sort it, has anyone had any probs with the aux belt tensioner causing a noise ? I think I will change it just to make sure
